Breast feeding in public... gross or okay?

I don't have kids so I really don't know why some women expose themselves in public to breast feed their baby. Yesterday, I was at the grocery store and this woman was wearing one of those baby slings, one of those hammock type things. As she walked past me, I was shocked to see that she had her shirt open and the baby was having his/her supper. I'm okay with mothers breast feeding their kid with a blanket tent over the shoulder thing, but I've seen more cases of women breast feeding in full view with no cover ups. Is that the new norm now?

As a woman who never bf in public (and only bf my first for 6 weeks), your post comes across as a bit offensive. The amount of skin that is exposed when a woman bf's her baby is no more than a woman wearing a bathing suit, or even a low cut shirt. For the life of me, I can't understand anyone's problem with a woman actually using her breasts in the manner they are intended for, and yet have no problem seeing the same amount of skin on the front of magazines in the supermarket.

Perfectly OK, even without a blanket/cover. I almost never used one since my DD hated being covered while she was eating.

I don't mind a woman breastfeeding in public- in the baby sling I don't see how you could find that offensive... unless you are staring in trying to get a look I don't know how you could have seen too much.

oh boy,this is going to get ugly. For what it's worth, I don't have any problems with women BFing in public. If the baby was in a carrier and he was nursing, then how much did you really see? As another poster already said, I've seen more exposure on magazine covers, at the beach, on women/teens with super low cut tops on. I don't see what the problem is

Dont like it? dont look I'm guessing you'd have rather have had the baby screaming because he/she was hungry right? damned if you do damned if you dont I was not talented enough to walk around and bf in public but I did sit and bf in public I highly doubt people even knew what was going on the amount of skin showing was little to nil..

Never gross to feed a baby, and there are laws to protect bfing rights. And yes, as more women choose to breastfeed it won't seem gross and weird but as a normal way to feed a baby. Which it is!

I breastfed my DD, but couldn't do so in public. That's just me.

I see nothing wrong with it, but personally do appreciate a little discretion. I am envious of those who are more comfortable and casual about it. It is a natural thing and I don't understand it bothering people so much.

One more thing, the models on tv and in ads probably show more skin than a mother who is breastfeeding. Heck, some of the outfits you see teens wear these days show more.

I don't find public breastfeeding offensive in the least.

I'm a nursing mom. If I have my nursing cover handy, I'll use it because it does make me more comfortable to be covered up. But, if I don't have it - I will still nurse whenever/wherever. I will, of course, try to be discrete about it but that's not my primary concern. Feeding my child is.

Heck, you see more skin and cleavage at Hooters! People eat there all the time and don't seem to mind.

I breastfed in public and have friends who do it. It doesn't bother me as long as it is done discreetly. Sorry but it does bother me when a woman just whips it out (and yes I have seen this) and lets both hang out while feeding. No attempts for covering up what is not being used. I am not even speaking of covering babies as much as covering up your skin.

I don't want to see a woman's chest flopping around anymore than I want to see a man in speedos.

It's about being discreet and not showy to me. Before anyone fights me on this, read my whole post. I have seen it done nicely and I have seen women baring it all literally and to me that is wrong and disgusting especially since most places I know have laws saying you can't go topless. Feeding a child is not an excuse to let it hang out IMO.

nothing wrong with it... I breast fed in public with a cover up. I would have liked to have been so skilled to walk around and do it....
