Breaking up a longer rental into two rentals...?

I'm looking at breaking up a longer rental (over two weeks) into 2 rentals, as the rate is much cheaper that way. I truly don't mind taking the first rental back to do this, and the savings is about the price of a full tank of gas. I consider that worthwhile for me, as it is a considerable amount.

Has anyone ever done this before?

Be sure to factor in the amount of gas you will use by driving the first vehicle back to the rental place and the second one back to where you are staying. Those would both be extra trips you would not make if you were doing one rental.

We have done this! It seems to be a little known fact that CC car rental insurance is only for a maximum of a two-week rental.

It wasn't a big deal going to/from the airport, and it was totally worth the peace of mind knowing the car was fully double insured (CC and our car ins. co). Once we re-rented the same vehicle, and once we switched to a different vehicle on purpose (we were minivan shopping, so we wanted to try two different brands/models---it really worked!).

Just be sure when you go to the return area, you tell the people you are re-renting, and they'll move you to a location where you can get out easily. The best suggestion might be for you to go to the airport alone---leave the fam at the outlets or near the pool. That way the inconvenience only falls on one member of the group (generally my DH!! ;) .

I disagree. There is no way so far of knowing whether a rental agency may treat two juxtaposed rentals as one rental when it comes to rules regarding credit card insurance, etc. At least pretend that you are not commencing a second rental.

I would really want to say, use a different rental company for the second rental.

Some hotels won't honor a second coupon that normally applies one per stay when you check out and immediately check back in for the purpose of creating a second stay.

If you are planning to rent from Alamo or National you don't have to go back to the airport but can drop off at car care center or Dolphin hotel, saving you gas. If you do decide to return to airport then a couple of things 1. You return the car and then go inside so who would know that you are rerenting. Is it a rerental or a new reservations ;) 2. If you use Emerald Aisle then drop off walk over to the aisle and pick out your new car and go.

PattiPB, thanks for the heads up about the insurance! I had no idea there was a specified time period for the coverage.

This would actually be a re-rental, so I don't really see any problem about doing this now that I can see I would need to do so for the insurance coverage. I can probably get the same rate from a sister company. I'll check into it.

It's worked for me. :confused3 You have two separate rental agreements with dates and times.

As always, YMMV---literally this time!! :rotfl2:

My DH and I have been discussing this today, and FWIW, I agree. It is two different rentals. Say I wanted to rent a mid-size, then later switch to something smaller (or larger). I'm not really seeing a problem with it, but maybe I haven't thought everything through enough yet.

Most rental companies have many locations at various hotels on International Drive and 535. It would be a lot easier than heading back to the airport. I did this recently when other people joined me down there and I needed a bigger vehicle. Went to the hotel lobby and switched cars.
