i don't have kids, but am going back with a friend that has 2 boys (18 & 13) I was going to buy them new shoes for the trip but don't know how early to get them. I want them to be broken in but not destroyed by the time we go. I know teenage boys are hard on there clothes. Any idea? Is 1 month early enough, or not enough to time? I want to surprise them so I didn't ask their mom.

I think the general rule of thumb is to put 50 miles on the break in new shoes. You could enlist their help in getting to the 50 mile mark and no more .

Don't surprise teenage boys with new shoes unless you are absolutely 100% sure that they will love them. And by that I mean that they have specifically said to you - completely unprompted - that they want those particular shoes. You should also be prepared for the shoes to be really uncomfortable for them even after they're broken in and they may not be able to wear them even if they like them. Shoes are really, really difficult to buy for someone else. I have been married for nearly 20 years and I buy almost everything my husband wears. I will not buy his shoes.

Typically, you can expect shoes to be broken in after about 50 miles. I have no idea how long it takes these particular boys to walk 50 miles.

I usually buy new shoes about 3-4 weeks before a trip (including new inserts because they wear out, too).

I am 5 weeks out and currently bought a new pair of shoes to try to break in before the trip. Not sure if I'll get 50 miles in but I bet 5 weeks will do the trick ;)

Do not surprise them, you will most likely just have spent good money for nothing. I would nto even take them. I woudl give them whatever money you lan to spend and ask them to choose good walking sneaks, and do it 4 weeks in advance.

My DGD is 14 and I cannot remember the last time anyoen could buy shoes for her unless she not only chose them, but tried them on to see if they were comfortable.

I use to ask my sister who had bigger feet than me wear my sneakers first. Hey presto nice roomy broken in shoes! I had a nice sister.

Buy them about 4 weeks before the trip and have them wear them as much as they can, even if its just around the house. They will be broken in before the trip.
