Breakfast Question

I posted this on the restaurant board, but since it is budget related I thought I would try here too.

We are planning to be at the park openings, so we are only scheduling a sit down breakfast on our sleep in day. So, my question is what to do on the other park opening days? We have the MYW dining plan so we have 1 CS and 1 TS a day, but we plan to use those for lunch and dinner. We don't want to spend a ton of extra money on food off the plan, but would be willing to pick up a few small items here and there.

We are staying in Carribean Beach Resort so we will can request a fridge in our room to put milk for cereal in the room. This is what I thought. Or I was also thinking of packing some cereal bars for the bus ride. I'm just not sure this would be filling enough for my ds(5)--he is a big eater.

What are some other suggestions for fast, easy, inexpensive, somewhat nutritious breakfasts?

Jen
PS We are flying and doing magical express, so a grocery stop is out.

We did the same thing...We had a fridge in our room at the ASMo. We bought cereal and milk from Walgreens because we had a car, but in the gift shop they sell milk, and breakfast items..I would recommend you pack some bowls , spoons, and a box or 2 of cereal in your luggage because cereal is VERY expensive there...I paid 4.00 for a regular size box of raisin bran which is like 2.50 here at home. You can buy snacks to take in the parks in case he gets hungry before lunch.... But anyway we would wake up at like 7 am get showered and clothed and sit down and eat cereal and watch cartoons every morning..LOL

We also brought instant oatmeal and grits and used the hot water from the coffee makers to make them. You can bring breakfast bars as well.

If he'll eat a meal bar you could try that. Clif bars are great, or you could just get the regular power bars or the like. That and a banana is a very healthy, filling breakfast!

I really like the Quaker Breakfast squares. They are more filling than just a snack bar, and I think they taste kind of like oatmeal cookies (but they aren't too sweet). I ate one of these for breakfast (especially the days we were in a hurry to get to the parks), and maybe had a banana too. That kept me filled up until an early lunch - and I am a pretty big eater.

Since you can request a fridge (don't know if you'll have a car or not though) you can purchase perishable items at the CBR resort like milk, OJ and yogurt.
Here are some in-room breakfasts we have done:

Cereal w/milk, banana, orange juice, yogurt with granola, breakfast bars (cereal bars), instant oatmeal (w/water from coffee maker).

If you have a car & can make a quick grocery stop you could pick up the items there for less. We also pack things like goldfish crackers, tubes of Pringles (for snack later & they don't get crushed), raisins, granola bars and cheese/crackers, cheese/peanut butter snacks.

When we fly we pack a small suitcase with just food items, bowls, spoons, etc... and then when we come home we have an empty bag for all the items we purchase & other souveniers (park maps, etc..) that seem to accumulate.

GL with your planning. It also helps to explain to your kids what will be going on (we'll be having breakfast at the hotel & we need to bring things along to eat...what would you like?) so they can be part of the planning & know what to expect.

We just split breakfast meals from the food court. Two meals to share between the four of us was only around $10 or so (DH did the food runs while I was getting ready). We ate in the room to save time.

I believe all the moderate resorts have a fridge in the room now already, and no charge!

A jar of peanut butter and/or jelly could also do the trick. Buy a loaf of bread or some bagles to go with it. When I've traveled for work with no car, I pack non-perishables in an extra suitcase as mentioned above and also carry some things in my carryon bag.

I've carried a small lunchbag type cooler many times with a few items like yogurt and cheese. When our family took a long trip by air a couple of years ago, we took a carryon size rolling cooler full of meats and things that we didn't want to buy at our destination.

do a search, there are several shopping services that people have used such as wegoshop. I don't think its very expensive.

We always eat breakfast in the room or 'on the run'. We pack cereal (Cheerios & Raisin Bran), breakfast bars, Poptarts. We store a half gallon of milk in the refrigerator for the cereal but I also buy cheese sticks, grapes, bananas and go-gurts. PopTarts are a treat but the kids can't have one unless they drink a glass of milk or have some fruit.

I am one who has to have protein in the morning...if your DS is a hearty eater you could bring bread or english muffins, mayo, and precooked bacon...nothing yummier than bacon sandwiches and some type of real juice...I like grapefruit...or bread and real cheese...hardboiled eggs and toast or bread and butter...grits w/ butter and cheese...pb and dried apricot or raisin sandwich on whole wheat...bagels w/ garlic herb cheese, or bagels, cream cheese and salmon...I'd call the resort, check out their offerings, check w/ wegoshop, then supplement w/ whatever I could bring from home. I stay away from breakfast bars or drinks, Clif bars, granola bars, oatmeal (just instant, I love real oatmeal)...all they do is get me ready for my REAL meal !!!

They have the fridge allready in the room. At the food court there is a microwave and toaster so we brought bagels and english muffins with us and toasted it there. Also if you want some bacon Hormel makes a pre cooked bacon that you just heat that is so good.

Hi when we went last year I sent a box of stuff directly to my resort. Cereal, small jar of peanut butter, package of bagels etc. Just send it about 5 days prior to your arrival by U.P.S.. Address it to yourself and put your arrival date on the front clearly noticeable.Do not send it regular mail as it will go to the Disney distribution center and take too long. UPS delivers directly to the resorts. This worked out great for us and my daughter also had some of her favorite snacks on hand. Have a great Trip! :wave2:

I don't know how many of you are going or if this is feasible since I know you said that your 5 yr old is a big eater, but, we plan on splitting our CS meals off the dining plan. Knowing that we will have one big TS meal a day, I think we will have plenty of food for a 2 small meals a day splitting the CS meals and with the snacks throughout the day.

Just a thought, we are a family of 5 and are used to splitting the meals at WDW to meet our budget. Most of the meals serve too much food.
Just a thought.... we also do cereal and pop tarts in the morning too though on some days.

Have fun. I am looking forward to eating well the last week of Sept!
Pam
