Came home from work on Monday to find our house had been broken into (by a small basement window) Lost 100 US that I had just bought on Sat for our Dec trip to WDW, a watch and my DD's laptop that she had been given to by her Uncle just 7 days ago. The PO investigating ask her if she had Facebooked the fact she had a new laptop(she is 15) of course she did. He warned her about posting things on the internet including being away on vacation. The police believe youths from the local High schools are involved in B and E's and they are on the internet. Just a heads up to everyone!

Sorry to hear this. Many years ago, our house had an attempted breakin ... the basement windows were frosted, so it wasn't until they broke one that they found themselves faced with the inside bars that our neighbourhood watch captain had suggested we install. And even though they never got in, we still had the feeling of being violated. :(

And yes, unfortunately kids today, who are forever texting their friends 24/7 and post EVERYTHING on Facebook, don't really have an understanding of what privacy is all about. The cyber world is huge, and unfortunately, they don't really get the privacy concept because it's always been a part of their lives. Whenever we are going away, I have to remind myself and DD NOT to post anything about it ... but then we get people posting on our walls that say "hey, have a GREAT TRIP". Again, just the whole cyber-generation thing ... thank goodness for the Delete option. ;)

Easy way around that, just delete your Facebook account.

I'm very much into computers and the internet, but I never warmed up to FB, I just don't see the use, I can keep in touch with my friends through e-mail and Skype. If I want to share pictures, I send them a link to Picasa.

It's funny, when you choose to delete your FB account, they want to know why, there is even an option "I have no use for it" :-)

I love the computer as well along with DD & DF. We all have our own computers. I also love FB and wouldn't want to delete it. But I do not post that I am going away. And b/c my DD is only 13 she wants to post it. Everyone knows that she is going away so I just tell her to mention in there that her aunt will be staying at the house watching our cat. Usually my parents come and check on the house while were away but since they will be with us this year at the wedding we have a friend stopping by.

We also start leaving lights on throughout the day so that it doesn't look funny when we leave and there on. And then we have the automatic lights that we have programmed to turn on/off at certain times, even if they power goes out they are then battery operated.

Another thing we have out in front are 2 camera's. And this sounds funny, but over the summer we have been egged and finally got mad and purchased camera's for the front of the house in case they try to come back. I am really nervous now since I think I know who it is and there kids at my daughters school so I don't want them doing more damage while were away. But over the weekend DF was outside and the boys were walking by and he could hear them commenting about the camera's. I hope this will deter them. :confused3

Sorry for the long post. And sorry to hear you house was broken into. It is such a violation and it's a scary feeling.
