How do you cook brats? I have heard you can cook them in beer and then grill them. Do you poke holes in them? Please help! I know this should be posted on the Cooking/scrapping boards but i need to know fast. thanks!!

Whatever you do, DON'T attempt to cook them on a George Forman grill! We tried that the other night, and they came out horrible -- burned on the outside, nearly raw inside. Yuck!

I learned my lesson -- I'm sticking to Hebrew National beef franks! ;-)

Are they raw or pre-cooked?

If they're pre-cooked, then just throw them on the grill, otherwise, I would boil them on the stovetop and then finish them on the grill. :)

i think their raw. Their Johnsonville Brats...

I boil them in beer until the beer evaporates. an then cook them on the grill.

mrsmom... do you poke holes in them with a fork before you boil them? or just drop them in?

Just drop them in -- there shouldn't be a need to poke holes in them. :)

no need to poke holes.

I usually do them without the beer boil first. You just have to cook them at a lower temp for longer so they are cooked through. If you boil first you can do a fast, high heat sear.

I'm making "hot tots and brats" tonight! (I do chopped potatoes and onions, "tots", on the grill too in a foil packet with a dressing of Italian dressing and mustard - yum!)

Never and I repeat NEVER poke a hole in a brat!!!!!!!!

Take 3 cans of beer, and 1 large onion. Boil that stuff along with the brat. Don't know how long. Just till it looks right. Then grill them. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I don't make them, don't like them, but see the commercial's for the Johnsonville ones all the time. They show you to cook in beer with onion first, then finish on grill. My favorite one shows a bbq where a younger man is manning the grill and about to poke them. The wiser, older man takes the poker out of his hand, hands him tongs, and lets him know to never poke them. Makes me laugh for some reason.

Never Never poke the Brat!!!! Do not boil them either, bring the water or beer to a boil, place brats in and then turn down the heat and simmer, just before boiling point, this way they won't be tough.
My ex cook boil and serve a dinner in record time, think she did it on purpose so I would do the cooking.
