(Tazicket posting as Golf4Food) We would like to branch out and try a new counter service restaurant on our next trip to the World next month. We're thinking about trying the Rose & Crown Pub, since we've never been there. I don't eat seafood, but the turkey sandwich looks interesting. The menu says that it comes served with Branston Pickle.

What is Branston Pickle like? I've looked it up online and am still a little confused. Is it closer to a dill or sweet pickle flavor-wise? Or is it something totally different?

Any other recommendations for a CS dinner would be appreciated as well. We usually hit Sunshine Seasons (and love it) but wanted to give something else a chance. :)

Thanks!

It's not what we (Americans) think of as 'pickle'. There are some gerkins in it along with onions, apples, carrots, other veggies, malt vinegar, caramel, on and on. It's a thick, chunky veggie condiment with a sweet tangy flavor.

I would compare it to relish if I had to compare it to anything.

Another CS to try is Tangierine Cafe- really wonderful food.

Think of it as a savory chutney. Fruity, salty, and tangy all at once, it would probably taste great on a turkey sandwich.

Its been around in the UK since 1922.

Over here in the UK it is the pickle normally associated with a cheese & pickle sandwich! Tastes great. :thumbsup2

Its got diced swede, carrots, onions, cauliflower & gherkins which are in a sweet spicy style chutney style sauce made from vinegar, tomatoes, apple & dates, it also has spices in it such as mustard, coriander and garlic. The sauce is quite thick & brown. Doesn’t sound so appealing :rotfl: but its actually lovely and goes really well with sandwiches & cold meat.

Go and try some and see for yourself

Is food at the pub considered counter service??

I should note here that the Rose & Crown Pub is not a counter service for DDP purposes.

While you can order pub food at the bar, (I have ordered the cheese plate before and I don't know what else you can order now besides fish and chips) I do not believe you can pay for it with DDP counter service credits.

If you are not on the dining plan, you can disregard this message.

Branston one of the things I miss from England. The others have described it well! It is brown in color !! Delish !!

I love Branston pickle but then my mother's from England so I've been eating it since I was a kid. It's tangy and sweet and is delicious on sandwiches, especially cheese or turkey. I would suggest asking for it on the side, then you can try it before you put it on, just in case.
