My front brakes started grinding on the way to work yesterday. They only grind when I'm slowing not when I'm putting hard pressure on the brakes. I imagine it is my pads but I'm concerned that the grinding was the sound of my rotors being ruined. I didn't get the "squeaking" to warn me that my pads were low (which I read in my manual I was supposed to get). It just started grinding out of nowhere. Any car guys/gals out there that have an idea what this might be and what it is going to cost me? I'm dreading taking it in and don't even know if I should drive it in for fear of ruining my brakes. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Sounds like rotors need reground and front brake job,I would think around $150-$200.If you don't fix now you could ruin rotors that will increase cost of repair.:earsboy:

Good luck! Mine are starting to squeek. I guess that means it's time to take it to Sears where they are hopefully more reasonable than the dealer. The dealer charged me $600 for the front brakes last time.

First off i'm not a mechanic but I think when anything out of the ordinary is happening to your brakes you should always have them looked at!

Now having said that I have a honda civic that also often gets a grinding noise from the right rear brake. My brakes in the back are drum brakes not disc. When I take to the shop its always the same, rust build up. They give it a couple of good wacks and the rust breaks free. They always inspect it to make sure nothing else is wrong.

You could just have some rust built up on the drums or rotors if its disc brakes and may not necessarily need a brake job.

Do you have a regular place that you take it to and trust the people there? If so take it in and let them have a look, if not take it to a couple of diff places and let them look at it. In any case you should get them looked at.
Hopes this gave you some help.

Great Googily Moogily! I hope that price includes a new set of tires too! My wheel place said it would only be 150-200 when it comes time to replace them.

My darling stepdaughter would tell you to "turn up the radio!". But that being said get them checked out. Noise of any kind with the brakes is not normal.
