Braces and Disney

DD 12 got her braces in March. She has done a wonderful job taking care of them. We have had only one incident where the wire on the top on one side came out. It was an easy fix.

I was wondering about our trip in December. What happens of she pops a bracket or a wire comes loose again? Have any if you ever had this happen? And what did you do to fix it? I do plan to talk to our orthodontist but since it's the weekend, I decided to ask here as well!

My son has a wire snap as he bit into a Mickey Bar at DHS in2008, about 2 weeks after getting braces.

We called our orthodontist, who got back to us the next morning.

Basically he said to tuck the end in, or pull the wire out....whichever was easier... And see him upon our return.

I would suggest bringing some Wax, and some Tylenol in case your daughters teeth hurt as they shift.

Our DDs had braces for years and never had a problem. The only thing that happened is that she forgot her wax and it had become painful when eating. The concierge in the hotel fixed it by ordering for us and it was shipped to our room within 3 ours. It only cost us $9. It was the best $9 that we spent in Disney. We didn't have to go anywhere and our DD was better within hours.

That DD doesn't have braces anymore but this year we are going with 2 other kids with braces - we will bring plenty of wax.

Not in Disney, but my son had a wire pop out a few weeks ago. It was connected in front, but poking in the side of his cheek toward the back. It was going to be a few days before we could get in to see his orthodontist. They told us it was okay to use a pair of nail clippers to actually clip the wire close to the bracket. Then if it still bothered him, to cover it with wax.

So I would just suggest having those two things with you. Personally, neither of my sons ever wanted to use the wax for anything. They tried it and just didn't like the feel. But if it was something that was irritating them, I'm sure it would help.

My youngest got his braces a week before one of our trips. We drove 15 hours through the night, arrived at WDW around 6:30 am, checked in and got breakfast at the food court. He bit into a huge cinammon roll and something happened, and when he opened his mouth, his top wire was sticking out of his mouth. It was a Saturday morning, DH called our orthodontist's office and got the machine with his home number. He waited until about 8:30 then called him at home. He suggested DH go ahead and take the wire off and he would fix it when we got back home.

My DD had her braces put on a month before we went to Disney a few years back and I was terrified of the same thing. I asked and my dentist said the same as those above, bring wax, fingernail clippers ( to clip wires if they poke), and if they break, pull them out- or clip until they are not poking. They can change the wires when you get back. No big deal.

Thank y'all so much!! We do tend to carry wax with us. She doesn't like it but knows that it helps when she gets the occasional sore from wires and whatnot! I wouldn't have thought about the nail clippers. I'll add that to the packing list!!

If that happens, then you practice do it yourself orthodontics. We were out of state on a holiday weekend the one time a wire popped out on my daughter. I called the answering service and when the assistant called me back she talked me thru pulling the wire out. and we went in and had it replaced as soon as we got home.

If something happens, you call the orthodontist and they tell you what to do. I don't think it's something worth worrying about unless something happens.

Totally not worrying! I'm your typical type-A, "have a plan for what might happen" girl!!

Slightly off topic: My DD8 will be going for molds for an expander next week - in theory she could then get it in just before our trip - I think I'm going to hold off until we return, as she may still be learning to eat/talk, etc!
Do you agree?

Yes, I would. My kids had a bit of discomfort with the expanders. No point in doing that before WDW.

The only other consideration is when school starts. Given the choice, where would you/she prefer the discomfort?

I would hold off. When DD12 get her expander two years ago, it took her a while just to get the hang of eating. If you can hold off, I would.

Yes, definitely hold off if you can! But as someone mentioned, school is also an issue. Best time to do it is during a school vacation if you can. They definitely have trouble with eating the first few days (maybe a week or so even!). My son became rather self-conscious about eating at first because he was having so much difficulty.
