boy dog or girl dog?

We are looking at getting a dog soon, and not sure if we should get a boy or girl. We are not looking to breed. Just wondering what are the benefits to each? DH does want to hunt with the dog as well. ANy ideas?

Girls grow up faster, fewer behavior issues, I'm told.............often if someone has a behavior prone male, I've heard the advice to bring in an older female and she'll straighten him out!

I've only ever had males for any length of time...........

We have three girly labs. I think they are easier to train, less fuss and are less likely to wander.

But that's just us. Really, if you take the time to train them right (Baby Belle just graduated from puppy kindergarten last night!) then you will have a great dog.

Ok, I speak from experience here. I own 2 dogs, both girl dogs. For the last 12 years I do dogsitting. I do have doggie customers who come to my house while owners are on vacation. I have taken care of some very lovely boy dogs, no problems. BUT, this is a big BUT... I have other boy dogs who mark in the house...ARGGGGG.....yes these boy dogs are fixed and some are just "markers"... I cant stand that... Owners of boy dogs, please dont flame me. Im just speaking from experience. I have some boy customers who have been my customers for many yrs, never left their leg in my house NEVER...then I have some who feel the need to lift their leg because it smells good. I cant stand that. Truthfully you just never know who the boy markers will be. Girl dogs dont mark like that. If a girl dog pees in the house, usually they are nervous, not marking because of a good smell.
Ok, just my 2 cents on the topic....

BTW.... my favorite customers is a boy dog, a big huge golden retriever named "Champ"... hes never once marked inmy house. He is the best dog ever.

I have both female and male. Minnie is terminally crabby probably the breed, Hershey is happy always tail wagging.

With either sex have them neutered early that can curb many behaviors.

I've had both and my 2 girl dogs were great, my three boy dogs were great and the one boy dog I have now is a monster..but that is just his personality, not because he is a male. My mle dogs never marked anywhere in the house, most of them lifted their legs, which meant the peed on the fence but the idiot I have now squats like a girl! If I had a female dog I would get her fixed for sure -I do that with the males too-but a female for sure would be fixed, I don't want that mess around my house!

Males are more needy (in every species ) and females are more dependent and territorial. However, if you want a more peaceful dog, females are calmer and males are more playful (it must be all that extra energy from not having to clean)!

Boy Dog all the way. I find male dogs are more relaxed. My dog is a male and he is the calmest dog I have ever seen.

I've had both male and female dogs - and I love both sexes just the same. I loved my girl Golden (she passed back in Oct.) and now I have 2 males. One a Golden Retriever and one a Chocolate Lab. I can honestly tell you that I see no difference in behavior and I love having either male or female.

girl dog.. definetely.

Our female Lab was sweet, loving and affectionate.

My male mini poodle is aloof, sleeps a lot and is very territorial. He hates anything to walk by the house and barks.

The answer to this really depends on the breed you are thinking of. As a dog breeder, I usualy find that many folks THINK they want one sex over the other because the ASSUME that one sex is easier, but in reality, it could be the opposite for any given breed. For example, I breed and show terriers. Most terrier breeds are ver active and independant, but for the most parts the females are much more so than the males. For that reason, I usually reccomend males to the people who are looking for a dog who is going to be dependant on them and more affectionate. I do find terrier females to be better watch dogs though. For breeds like a Lab or Golden, the opposite is true. So choose your breed first, and go to a responsible breeder who will help you determing not only which gender, but which individual dog might be the best choice for you. A responsible breeder should be doing temperament tests etc, to help in making that determination.

I have experience with both male and female and I cannot say one is better than the other is such general terms. Just like people, it really depends on the dog's personality. I don't think you can determine potential personality by sex alone...at least not enough to say one is going to make a better pet than the other.

I think the most important thing is neutering at an appropriate age, when it comes to sex related issues.
