In the old days, it was also the day when churches distributed the charitable contributions that had been left in the "Poor Box" at the rear of the church. (Now, of course, the box is emptied daily, and the charitable distributions are year-round.)
In Ireland it is also known as St. Stephen's Day (kind of depends on whether you are Protestant or Catholic). In the country the traditional celebration was a bit like trick-or-treating for grownups; the "Wren Boys" went house to house looking for money for a drinking fund. (Modern versions of the collection are usually done for charity.)
