Do we have any bowlers out there?

What do you bowl - candlepin, duckpin or 10-pin?

Hubby and I are in a 10-pin league. Actually, hubby is in two leagues. I'm only in one.

What's your average? I finished last season with a 121 and hubby was at 185.

Our league starts in about 2 1/2 weeks and I'm really looking forward to it, although I am hoping that we have one new teammate. (Anyone in the Attleboro, MA area want to join a Saturday bowling league?) We had this guy on our team last year who drove us absolutely nuts. He thinks he's a pro and is always telling the rest of us (with the exception of my husband) how to bowl. I told him that until he has a consistent 200 average, don't tell me how to bowl.

My husband and I went bowling with a friend of ours last night. The friend is our third teammate. We had a lot of fun too. And we all agreed that we really need a new 4th. We have a great time together and he's the one who brings the team down.

So...anyone else getting ready for a fall bowling league?

What is candlepin? I've done the other 2, but never heard of that.

Candlepin is tall, candle-like pins, but you use the small bowling balls. You get 3 balls per frame instead of 2. Strike is still the same as 10-Pin. Spare is if you knock out all 10 with the first 2 balls. And if you knock out all 10 with three balls, I believe it's just called a 10 box.

It's pretty popular up in this area. Hubby and I tried it once and we were pitiful. It's tough and apparently, there has never been a perfect 300 game.

That's the same as duckpin though? At least, the rules are the same. Maybe the pins are different?

DW and I are in a couples league that our neighborhood runs. It's our third year bowling in it. It's very, very casual (e.g. only a handful of the people in the league are serious bowlers) and it's only one Saturday a month from Sept through April, so it's not too much of a time constraint but yet gives us a chance to get out of the house without the kids at least once a month.

I think I averaged somewhere around 125 last year. DW averaged a little under 100. Needless to say our team (our neighbors behind us are our teammates) racks up the handicap pins most months. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I bowl 10-pin..though badly. Did a league once. They were a no-tap league so only 9 pins of a strike. That of course meant I would always hit only 8 pins....or 7 pins then 1 pin. Grrrrr.

Hubby has done leagues too and even scored a 300 in a sanctioned league and he much enjoys his coveted plaque for his efforts.

He bowls like 230 or something. He hasn't done league in a while as he has been away--but I hope he can get back to it soon as he just loves to bowl.

I even score bad on bumper bowling with the girls. I think I may have my bowling ball taken away.

I bowl like 70 on a good day.

I love bowling! Our league begins on Sept 9th and I can't wait. I am a single mom and it's on Friday nights so this gives me a chance to be out of the house and take my son along. In fact, my son began bowling about 3 years ago and really loves it too. He has made it to the Pepsi state finals twice.

I so look forward to my Friday nights even tho I am not that great a bowler. I average about 125 but the last few times of practice I have been doing better. You never know, maybe the ole saying of more practice, makes better might be true.

My family and I LOVE to bowl! I am in 2 leagues, one with my husband, mom, and brother and another with just my mom (all girls league). I bowl on Sunday evenings and monday mornings. My son has been bowling since he was 10 months old(he walked at 8 months). We bought him his first bowling ball for his 2nd b-day. My daughter started bowling when she was 1 1/2. :thumbsup2

Used to bowl in a candlepin league with a 105 avg (for candlepin - that's pretty good - the pros average 120-130).

Candlepin is bowled only in New England, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Not too many people outside the region know about it. I was in Las Vegas one Sunday morning in one of teh Sports Books when I was surprised to see Candlepin bowling. Turns out they had NESN (New England local sports channel) on. I overheard a couple guys talking and pointing 'It looks like bowling, but nothinng like I have ever seen' :rotfl2:

Duckpin has pins smaller than ten pin, and balls bigger than candlepin is the best way I can describe it.

OP - I'd love to join your league but I travel on business a lot and Sat mornings are my 'honey dew' mornings. Do you bowl at the place on rt 1??

I bowl in a regular 10 pin league. We bowl our sweepers in Las Vegas. My average hovers around 120.

The pins are different...taller and more squared off. I'll have to see if I can find a picture.

I've never been duck pin bowling, so I didn't know those rules.

Yes, those are our lanes. We bowl at 4:00 pm. It was the perfect league for us with our work schedules and gives us time to get things done in the morning.

I've bowled all three but, living in Massachusetts most of my life, I was usually at a candlepin lane.

Candlepin bowling is a variation of bowling that is confined to the New England states of Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire and to the Canadian Maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (with one isolated candlepin center in Cincinnati, Ohio). It was developed in 1880 in Worcester, Massachusetts by a local bowling alley owner, Justin White. As in other forms of bowling, the players roll balls down a wooden pathway to knock down as many pins as possible.

The Rest of the Story

My highest score ever was 117. A fluke. My average was around 80. We use to watch the bowling on Saturday's at noon on channel 5. I even remember Jim Britt. My favorite all star bowler was Rosario Lechiara. What a babe!! I even went in to Boston to see him bowl when I was a teenager. We all had crushes on this guy. :teeth:

Hubby and I got to see bowling for dollars over the weekend. I think it was Sunday on the WB.

Hubby is from NJ and had never seen candlepin before he moved up here. Now he watches it whenever he can.

All our 3 teen ds are certified bowling coaches, but oldest is now a lifeguard so he is kind of out of it right now. DS 16 and 14 are coaching the kids bowling camp at the lanes this summer. This past year they had a team of 3 and ds 15 got the highest league average, and ds 14 tied for the highest game, 222 and they came in 3rd place. They have 2 leagues to pick from, a just for fun one on sat. nights or on fri. nights a scholarship one. I dont know what to do yet. I am also hoping they get asked to coach on sat. mornings. They also do birthday partys at the lanes too. There are lots of new employees so I dont know what the fall will hold.

My DH and I bowl in a mixed league every Friday night. I like to call it socializing with a little bowling thrown in.
I only average 116. My high game is 179 and that was pure luck. I usually only bowl one or two games a season over 150. My DH has around a 150 average.
