Bought first dvc...question on points on hold

After months and months of reading, finally took the plunge and signed our first DVC offer. It was accepted and has now been sent to Disney.

The BWV contract has banked points due in Dec...but also has 51 points in holding that apparently must be used by Nov.31.

Assuming we pass ROFR at the 30 day mark (Aug 5), what are the realistic chances of finding anything available anywhere Nov.21-23 to use up the points?

Don't care about room or resort....just like to be able to use the points!

Thanks

As the days you are looking at are the Thanksgiving Holiday, probably zero to none.

Yikes...forgot about that.

Is it possible to use the points towards an RCI property then? We have some local properties I may be able to use in time.

Thanks

10 days since sent to ROFR...going into the scary 10 days....

Here's hoping I come out unscathed! haha

We're in a similar situation, having signed on a resale contract that has banked points that expire Nov. 31st, and we are currently in limbo as well.

I've asked a friend who is already a DVC member, and have done some reading online. Basically, I think if you are flexible with dates and resorts you will be able to use the points by the deadline. I've read that OKW, SSR and AKL Kidani are the ones that are most likely going to be available.

Holding points can only be used to make a reservation 60 days or less from check in. So you would not be able to book until September which, unfortunately, further reduces your chances.

you might be able to get the current owner to book for you.

You can not close a contract with a reservation. So, if the owner did this, they would have to delay closing on it until the reservation was over.

Is not a huge deal..I did not buy budgeting the held points...more of a bonus.

Hopefully I can find a couple of free days somewhere to use them!

Was sent to Disney July 6...so we are at 12 days and counting....fingers crossed the next 12 days go as fast and smooth!

Thanks

Just be prepared that it will take another 4 to 8 weeks after passing ROFR for the contract to close and have it entered into the Disney system.

OP,you have a lot of factors working against you to use those holding points, but I think that if you keep working the online booking system you should be able to piece together a few days to use those 51 points. Availability changes minute to minute, so luck will be involved. But I think persistence will improve your odds. Good luck!! :thumbsup2

Well my wife is very patient and has pulled out some amazing last minute restaurant reservations with Disney...so hopefully she can work her magic with these points too!

On the closing timeline, I think an additional 8 weeks after passing ROFR would be a big exception...most of what I have read puts turnaround between 3-4 weeks after closing deal. Here is hoping!

Thanks

Well at 23 days since submitted to Disney...hopefully will know this week!

Fingers crossed.

The day these points are available to use call and let the CM know you will take any resort or amount of days available. Then, if that does not work ask what is available for RCI. I called wanted Hawaii but told them that I would take anything place also on the West Coast. I ended up being able to chose from two places in Princevalle, Kauai.

So no one knows what the true availability will be at either DVC or RCI. Vacations are cancelled, strange assortment of days are left open, etc..... just be open and see what happens. Good luck!

I agree with your investigation of options so that you'll be ready to go when the points are available. Assuming you clear ROFR, it sounds like you'll be right at the end of Aug to early Sept. In addition to trying for a short time at a DVC resort before 1 Dec, you might have a list of RCI resorts that interest you. Remember that for a resort to be available for less than 7 days, it must be an RCI points resort, even then many resorts that are points resorts, don't deposit for less than 7 days (DVC doesn't either). Also be aware that almost all resorts charge an extra housekeeping fee for less than 7 days, the fee can be quite steep. Also consider the BVTC for Club Intrawest, which has 2 resorts in your general area. You could rent the points or possible do an RCI deposit first though for deposit first, you'd likely have to add points to get at least to 160. You might also consider renting them out but you still may have availability issues.

Thanks to all!

Passed ROFR today July 30th! Broker already submitted to closing company as they know I have those banked pts!

So now I get to wait for closing docs....but am just relieved to know I am soon to be a DVC member!

Thx
