Hi everyone! This is my first post here so I'm hoping to find some friends! Today I was out shopping and went to my local antique mall. In one of the booths I found a disney animation cel of madam mim in her dragon form from The Sword and the Stone. I was elated as I had never seen one in person before but had always wanted to start collecting them. The description on the tag said it was original but it had no certificate. The seller wasn't there at the time so I was unable to speak with them. However, it seemed in pretty good condition, there is a small section of paint missing in the lower right corner and it looks like it might be sticking to the backing in a few areas but other than that, it looks great. So I paid $150 for this and quite honestly, I don't know if it's a production cel or a reproduction or a fake. I also have no idea how I can go about finding this out. Any ideas?

Here are some pics:

I'm not a expert but it defiantly looks real. It's common for older cels to be stck to their backing. Does the backing have the original sketch on it also? If it does you may want to look into separating them so you can display both if not just l would just leave it so that you don't risk damaging the cel.

An easy way to tell if it's real is to match it to a scene in the movie you should be able to tell if it's real.

Also does it have some oval shaped holes along the top edge?

I haven't taken it out of the frame but from what I can see, there's no sketch with it. There are no holes at the top but I guess it could have been trimmed off. I'll definitely check the movie and see if I can match it. I've been looking online for a place that could appraise it but all the online companies seem to charge a lot of money. I'm still searching for some art appraisers in my area that could look at it in person.

the original animator sketch wouldnt be on the cel itself. It would have been xeroxed onto the clear mylar, and them painted in reverse.

Yeah, it's the real thing... If someone was going to forge it, they would not pick that scene and character. I'd say at least it is worth $350 - 450, maybe more because it looks like it is a pretty big image.

Only the ones sold through Disney have the seal, and have the laninate on the cell, but there are many Disney cells out there that did not go through the "Mouse Machine".

Great buy, congrats!!!

Yay that's great to hear! I had always wanted some disney cels but the original production cels sold online can cost a small fortune so I kept it as a dream for when I someday win the lottery lol. I was so happy to find this one at such a great price. I guess I was lucky cause I don't think anyone else there knew what it was! It was hanging in the corner of the booth practically ignored!
