Can you give me some advise about drinking tap water in LA???

We are receiving conflicting advise about what we should do.

We live in New Zealand - and there is no need to drink bottle water - the tap water is fine... We fill the kids drink bottles at the beginning of each day. And assumed we would do the same in LA/San Deigo... but now are not sure

Do you drink tap water or bottled water when in Southern California? Advise please

It is perfectly safe to drink. It probably does not taste as good as your water at home, but it won't make you sick. Municipal water tends to taste a little bit like chlorine. HTH

I take bottled water into the land, then fill it up with the tap water. Or I will buy a bottle of water, then do the same. There are different locations where one can have filtered water instead. If memory is serving me correctly, the first aid station is one of those places. And also at the various c/s locations. I so far, just use the water from the drinking fountains. Other than the water not being cold, it tastes much better than the tap water where I live. It is normally disgusting in my county. :faint:
Another thing that I like to do is add those little drink add-inns. I like Crystal light, and also Market Pantry brand that is by Target Corp. which there are Target Stores in the Anaheim/Garden Grove area. The closest one to the land is in Garden Grove. It is right next door to Anaheim. Easy to arrive at,and is close to so many different hotels.

I hope that you have a very fast and smooth trip and magical time visiting Ca. USA and Disneyland!

There's nothing wrong with the tap water. There is a hint of chlorine. I almost always refill my water bottle at drinking fountains. Another option is to ask for a cup of ice water and any quick service window, which is free and includes, well, ice ;). I also recommend a wide-mouthed bottle for that purpose (to fit the ice in).

From a safety point a view, tap water /should/ be safer than bottled water..

Yes, some bottled water comes from sparkling springs and other pristine sources. But more than 25 percent of it comes from a municipal supply. The water is treated, purified and sold to us, often at a thousandfold increase in price. Most people are surprised to learn that they’re drinking glorified tap water, but bottlers aren’t required to list the source on the label.

But from a taste point of view, I would probably go with bottled water haha. No water tastes as good to me as the water I grew up drinking.

Dasani comes from the tap water supply of the bottling company, which I'm going to imagine in such a big area is right there. Oh yay, paying 4.25 for filtered tap water. :headache:

The other thing the water there *probably* has (I haven't looked it up in awhile) that you might not is fluoride. And it's time-consuming to do the research for the bottled waters that don't include that (b/c they are bottled tap water). So even though we pay to get pristine, non-fluoridated water and a cooler here at home, we just deal with it while traveling.

only advantage of bottled water is you can freeze them and take them into the park and you have ice cold water all day long

I got one of those Brita water bottles and I plan on using that to filter my water into a spare bottle and then refill to bring into the parks. :)

I second this idea. My parents used to carry around 3/4 frozen water bottles into the park (with 1/4 water to help melt) and now I'm starting to do the same. Perfect for those really hot days!

There's actually really bad stuff in the plastic used to make water bottles that, if frozen, etc. can leach into the water inside. Bad, cancer causing stuff. I used to do this too, now I avoid almost all food/beverages sold in plastic, if I can.

According to DBF this stuff can also leach into your water if the bottles get too hot....so we usually have a case of water in the van, just in case we need it, but he says it's unhealthy to drink it because the "stuff" can leach into the water.

Either way, we drink bottled water while in DL. I like the ease of having it with me all the time and I like the way it tastes much better than tap water. but that's more a personal preference than anything else, I just don't like the way tap water tastes. At home we have a fridge filter that we use all the time, but on the go we have bottled water.

Yep, it's true. I did a lot of discovery about a year ago on bottled water and plastics...it's nasty stuff. But, I try not to come off as too much of a nut so I keep pretty quiet about it. :goodvibes

Now it's (usually) just my family that thinks I'm a nut, but I can live with that.

The plastics issue is why I carry my own reusable water bottle. That and I don't like refuse.

The water in Anaheim is fluoridated, if that's an issue for you.

Tap water is fine and there are lots of easy to find water fountains around the park for you to refill bottles at.

I think that there even some water fountains in Toontown that talk or do silly things to you.

The water is fine to drink, but it may come down to a matter of taste. We drink bottled water when we go down there because we find the water tastes different than it does here. To me it almost tastes "musty" or something. yuck.

Just an fyi...and counter service location will give you free ice water. They do the same in FL...we drink it there too.

My tap water at home tastes great, but in Anaheim I can only drink it if it's cold. So, I would fill up the bottles the night before and put them in the fridge and then take cold water in the morning (alternatively, you could just put in some ice from the hotel's ice machine!). I also use an insulated water bottle. And then I get a free cup of ice water at the CS restaurants and refill my water bottle throughout the day.

Southern California tap water is safe to drink.....for some it has an odd taste, but it is safe by American Government standards. New Zeland probably has standards as well, perhaps a bit different so you may notice a difference in water taste.

No need to carry a water bottle (and therefor no need to worry about all those nasty BPA chemicals). Just stop by any counter service and ask them for a cup of ice water....they'll serve you a FREE ice cold cup of water. Drink it, toss it and go on about your day without the need to carry something around. Or take it with you and sip while you waltz around the park, your choice.

If you are concerned about not really liking the flavor, here in America (and hopefully in your country) we have flavor packets that are easy to tuck into a pocket until you get your cup of water and pour it in, stir with the straw and now you have flavored water...thirst quenching but tastier than plain water. One popular brand is Crystal Light (http://www.kraftbrands.com/crystallight/Pages/default.aspx#/home) but there are dozens of different brands, flavors, etc. Here in Arizona the cost of a 10 count of flavor packets is under $2, so about .20 a use.

We do a lot of travelling all around the USA, and the water tastes different everywhere we go....I know Southern California has a bad rep, but it's not the worst we've tasted, lol. A day or two of drinking it and your taste buds get used to it anyway. It's just that most people won't give a second glass a chance, lol.
