Bottled Water In A Suitcase?

Our friends are leaving tomorrow, and she has a bunch of last minute questions. I pretend like I know it all and then come here and ask :) She knows my source of information, she just doesn't use a computer much.

They are taking bottled water for baby bottles. Can they pack these in the suitcase? Will they be safe? I always thought that was a bad thing, but he talked to a travel agent who said that would be fine, and they never explode.

Bottled water won't explode, but the bottles could be simply broken in soft sided luggage. The small air pocket in a filled water bottle cannot develop enough of a pressure differential to explode.

The biggest problem with carrying bottled water or beverages is schlepping around the weight or possibly having to pay an overweight surcharge at the airline check in counter.

Depending on how much they're bringing, I would think that weight would be the biggest issue. Water is heavy and they would risk going over the weight limit for checked luggage. That can be pricey.

You might suggest they look into having some delivered to them when they get there. I know that there are several grocery services (such as wegoshop) that deliver and I've also heard of people ordering bottled water from the Staples website and having that delivered directly to the hotel.

So the only issue is the weight, not what can happen to it? So, I could take an empty suitcase and put bottles of soda in it?

In the past I purchased a case or two of Evian in a box (not part box, part plastic cover), and labeled it and shipped it as a piece of luggage. I used to wrap it in brown paper, but I don't think you can do that now.

In theory, yes. however as one who has had their luggage and belongings ruined by some bafoon who did this, please don't. If one of the cans or bottles ruptures or otherwise leaks during flight, it can drip out of your suitcase and all over other people's, making a hunge mess.

So do we just need to call the resort and let them know that we are having somethign shipped and ask them to hold it for us?

We flew down in September with a case of water and half a case of gatoraid and never had any problems. The bonus was an empty suitcase coming home to stick extra stuff in!

When packing water, weight is pretty much the only issue. As to soda...if you decide to bring it with, just use a little common sense. Would you pack mouthwash in its bottle between two white shirts? Probably not...you'd put it in a bag first. Remember, anything that is liquid will leak if you don't want it to (well, that's always my luck at least)...so wrap it up in bags or something.

I've travelled quite a bit out of the country and always bring wine from home if I am staying with friends or bring wine from the foreign country home for everyone at home to enjoy...and the glass bottle never broke. Soooo...just use caution but if you need to pack soda.

If you decide to ship something to your resort, to have when you arrive, just have the resort address on it, your arrival date and your name. I've done this and it has worked. Also, you can try one of the grocery delivery services also. There is usually a $15-20 service charge, but if you have water delivered, you could add in some other foodstuffs for your trip. A lot of people here use www.gardengrocer.com

Be careful how you pack it. I was a victim of some careless person that had a bottle of alcohol in their carry on. It broke and on take off it spilled out of the overhead bin all over me and another passenger. I didn't appreciate smelling like I did and I am sure the businessman in his expensive suit heading to a meeting didn't like it either.

Just be careful with how you pack it. Seems easier to me to buy it when you get there or ship it ahead.

We pack flavored water in zip lock bags, 3 bottles per gallon sized bag. I've never had one break or even leak. We split the bags up between our pieces of luggage so that weight isn't an issue.

I did the exact same thing in June and Dec. No leaks at all.

In Oct I had water delivered thru Staples. Go to their site, water is $ 5 and up for 24...sign up for their I think it is staples rewards program and shipping is free. I ordered 2 cases and some pretzel and came within a few days. Ordered before I left home. Had it delivered right to OKW. Hope this might help. :goodvibes

How soon before you left did you order the water? And did you just put the resort's address, your name and arrival date like the other poster said to do?

Thanks so much! 28 days! :woohoo:

Hi yes I just actually called after I had signed up for the Staples reward card for the free shipping . I ordered a few days before I left and gave them the OKW resort address. It was delivered by UPS . I called for it at front desk and they went in the back a retrieved it. Very easy I think there is a thread about it somewhere on the Budget board. :goodvibes

A couple of years ago, I froze an entire case of water, packed the bottles in a soft-sided large cooler bag wrapped in towels to absorb the condensation and checked the bag. No problem!
We were staying at Pop then with no fridge, so when I got to the room, I put the still frozen bottles in the trash can and packed ice on top. Added ice every morning before we left and every night when we got back, we still had cold water well into our fourth day there.
This year, we'll be at CBR with fridge, I'm skipping all of that and have water shipped ahead from Staples!

The Staples idea didn't work for my friends, but we are definitely going to use that idea when we go in December! Thanks for sharing that!!
