Botched execution likely painful, doctors say

Exactly............use the money we would save to help the deserving hard working people who have to struggle everyday to make ends meet and who are an asset to society, not a drain.

I personally think that prison should be a Marine bootcamp. Heads shaved, constant PT, clean bunks with a quarter bounced off daily, no TV, no privileges whatsoever. As it is, they network on the inside to do more damage on the outside and then watch TV the rest of the day. Its not punishment. Its a low-class motel.

In many cases, it actually costs much more to execute a prisoner than to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives. Limiting the number of appeals could help reduce the cost. But as it stands, in many cases it is cheaper to keep them alive. And for the record, I am theoretically pro-death penalty, but it is a very flawed system.

Good!

And pay for them to get a roof over their heads and 3 squares a day?? For 30, 40, 50 years?? No thanks.

A study was done and found that it is cheaper this way. By the time the government gets done with the defense against the appeals the legal cost is out of site.

I had read that it is more costly to execute a prisoner than it is to keep them locked up for a life term.

Which is more of a punishment; death or a lifetime in a cell? Whether that death takes 34 minutes or 34 seconds what's the difference? I personally think rotting in prison for decades with no chance of parole is a much more severe punishment. The death penalty is a release from punishment. How odd that we are so willing to administer drugs to end a life of crime yet will not extend that privilage to those of us who wish to end their own suffering from terminal illness. And that's Eega's 2 cents.

We live in one sick country. It is barbaric for a government to kill its own citizens. We should be better than the cold blooded killers but we're not. We're just as bad as they are.

Why not just stick them in a death-row like cell (no TV, no fun stuff) and let them rot there?

Because that would be cruel and unusual punishment. The ACLU would have a freakin' duck fit. They have "rights" don't you know? What about their victims? Don't they have rights? What about their justice? ITA that you should die as you killed your victim.

I will add that I am biased as my dad (late 50's) was shot in the back in an attempted robbery. This was 12 days before my 16th b-day. He has missed all the milestones in my life. His killer is in jail 25 yrs to life. He keeps coming up for parole. WHY? If he gets paroled does my dad come back to life? Will he suddenly get paroled from his grave? I think not. Let em rot. period.

sorry.... rant over.

I have said this before, I think they should die the way they killed their victims. I somehow doubt that their victims did not suffer.

ITA 27 years is way too long to be on death row.

Finally someone who agrees with me! :thumbsup2

Well I just did a quick search and this is what I found:
In Fiscal Year 2004-05, it cost $18108 a year or $49.61 a day to feed, clothe, house, educate and provide medical services for an inmate at a major prison, ...
and multiply that by 27 years or more and I think a bullet is still a lot cheaper, quite honestly I would rather help our schools or the elderly get medicine.

Innocent people have been executed before and it could, and probably will, happen again. Life in prison without parole is a severe punishment (Eric Rudolph says it's driving him insane!). The death penalty is faulty, wrong, and immoral. Just because some miscreant decides to kill does not mean that society must do the same. We live according to democratic and compassionate principals, not Hammurabi's Code (eye for an eye).

Alot of the people taking pleasure in the botched execution and the suffering that it caused are Christians (I remember you from some of the religious threads. ;) ) Would Jesus take pleasure and cackle over another person's suffering?

Some of you might be more at home in Muslim fundamentalist Saudi Arabia where people gather in the public square to see whippings and beheadings---goading the executioner into a freny with their applause and chanting.

Excellent point.

I have always thought that life in prison would be far, far worse than death.

I don't see how that's possible. Got any statistics to back that up?

Jesus was perfect. Man will never be.

Hi Luken!

Raising my hand as a devout christian who is totally against the death penalty!

I also don't think Jesus would take pleasure or cackle over anyone's suffering, and that attitude of "satisfaction" over the death penalty bothers me too.

I don't think the death penalty is unbiblical, but I do know that when Jesus was faced with a death penalty situation (the stoning of the prostitute) he showed compassion.

And the christian in me thinks that as long as they are alive, even imprisoned for life...there is still hope for their repentance and their eternal souls.

ITA! But you do have to worry about taxpayer's money.

Not a big fan of the death penalty, as I would sure hate to be strapped down and waiting to die and really be that innocent guy.

CFer Im so sorry. I cant imagine the pain that you have gone through :(

As far as the death penalty, I am torn. I honestly believe that one who murders in cold blood has forfeited all rights naturally afforded anyone in this country. Part of me also believes that prison is far worse a punishment than death IF they lose said rights. I know someone who has spent time in prison. It wasnt a picnic but it wasnt torture either. He didnt do anything utterly heinous though (it was a money thing). I do feel though that prison should mean loss of any rights other than the basics to sustain life and amazingly enough that doesnt NOT include cable TV. IF that happens then yes it would be worse than the death penalty.

I am from North Idaho. The sentiment that I have heard from many back home is that if Joseph Duncan doesnt get the death penalty then it should be written off the books, there are few who deserve it more. I dont know how that will play out but I tend to agree with that.
