We're thinking of getting a puppy for our youngest son. Is there anything about these two breeds that I should know about? The owner said they shouldn't get over 8 pounds. We have a 85# lab now, so that sounds so tiny.
Any tips?

We do not have a mix, but have a Boston.
She is by far, the funniest dog I have ever had.

She is also a TERRIER. I don't know if you know much about terriers, but they are VERY busy.
Our Boston weighs 26 pounds. Even mixing her with a chihuahua would not get an 8 pound dog I don't think..... although there are smaller Bostons than ours.

I was wondering about the size. I thought most chihuahuas were at least 8 pounds, if not bigger. Hmm.

What do you mean by very busy? :)

I just looked up info on both breeds and it said the chihuahua often doesn't get along with other dogs. The puppies are only 7 weeks, though and our lab is very gentle and kind of lazy (he's 9). I wonder if that would make a difference.

She's on the go most of the time. Would be very happy to be running around the block.
Chases ANYTHING that moves. Hates little animals (cats, squirrels, skunks! etc) and would, I think, kill them if she got the chance. I don't know if all Bostons are like that, but this one sure is.
She is most happy being in motion.

Now that she is 3, she is a little bit better about sleeping at night.... used to be every little sound and she was UP. Somedays, she doesn't want to get up!

She also snores, a LOT. I did have nasal surgery done at the same time she was spayed and that helped the snoring some, but she still does it. Flat faced breeds are known for that.

She doesn't play well with others either, although our lab is 4 and was here when she arrived and they do very well together. The lab is NOT aggressive at all (the Boston is) and lets her do whatever she likes with her.
I think if the lab was aggressive then we would have trouble.

Chihuahuas are tiny, I think typically no more than 6lbs. I have one that is 3.5lbs and she is full grown. Not quite sure what a Chi/Boston Terrier mix would be like, but I will say this.. Chi's are not typically good for children. They're small and very sensitive to loud noises. But again, don't know what the dog would really be like mixed with BT, nor do I know how your son is.

That sounds like a really interesting combination. lol

We had a Boston several years ago. He was about 20-lbs. Like another poster said, they are terriers through and through. Ours liked to dig and run. The vet said to really watch him because these dogs(terriers) will easily get out in the street and get hit by a car because when theyr on a trail they have no sense of danger. And he was exactly right. We had to watch our Boston like a hawk.

Unfortunately, it is also common with terriers to have some issues with housebreaking. I don't know if it's their independent nature or what, but we had a devil of a time with our Boston and never did get him fully, predictably housebroken. Our 80-lb Standard Poodle was a snap and he would rather explode than mess up in the house!

We loved our Boston a lot. They are really quite funny creatures and very loyal. But I don't think we'll ever have another one. I think more poodles will be in our future. But smaller ones, haha.
