I am really starting to wonder if I understand how borrowing from future use years works. We receive our yearly allocation of points in September. Does this really have any bearing on borrowing from the "next" use year? My brother is trying to convince me that there is some relationship between borrowing and when you receive your points in the following scenerio....

We plan to stay at an Orlando resort, attempting to book at the 7 month window for a June '04 stay. We will be receiving around 100 points in September '04 (we borrowed for part of our stay that we just returned from 18Oct - 25Oct03) that constitute the balance of our '04 allocation. My thought is that we can then borrow the delta needed for the June '04 stay from the allocation that we would receive in September '05 (what I believe to be is the next year and when we receive the next year allocation). My brother says that we can only borrow for a stay that occurs after September 1, 2004 from the '05 points.

I thought that when you receive ie., the month, of your yearly allocation had more to do when you needed to bank points, etc. and not really with your yearly allocation available for borrowing purposes.

What is correct? Thanks for any clarity that you might add to the matter.

You have to relate the dates of your stay to the use year they are in, not the calendar year. You have a September use year, a June 2004 stay would be in your September 2003 use year (9/1/03 to 8/31/04). You could use banked 2002, current 2003 and borrowed 2004 points. For a stay 9/1/04 or after, you would be in your 2004 use year, you could borrow 2005.

Your use year has nothing to do with borrowing other than as it relates to when your trip will be.

So Dean, can I do what I am proposing and borrow from the Sep. '05 allocation for a stay in June '04 stay? Or is it how DebbieB responded?

September Use Year --

September 2003-August 2004

Trip is planned for June 2004.

For this trip you could use: Points that were banked from 2002 into September 2003, Current 2003 Use Year points, points that you borrow from September 2004. You cannot borrow from your September 2005 points for this trip.

I agree with your brother and with Debbie. You can only borrow from September 2005 for trips that occur between September 2004-August 2005.

No, you will not be able to do that. The June trip falls within your Sept 2003 use year just like your Oct 03 trip did. All you will have is the 100 points you could borrow from Sept, 2004.

It's easiest to understand if you make yourself a chart for your specific use year. For you, a September use year chart would look like this:

Use Year.....Vacation Dates
2002.....Sep 1, 2002 through Aug 31, 2003
2003.....Sep 1, 2003 through Aug 31, 2004
2004.....Sep 1, 2004 through Aug 31, 2005
2005.....Sep 1, 2005 through Aug 31, 2006
2006.....Sep 1, 2006 through Aug 31, 2007
2007.....Sep 1, 2007 through Aug 31, 2008
2008.....Sep 1, 2008 through Aug 31, 2009

and so on.

The vacation dates determine which use year the points must come from. A June 2004 vacation is within your 2003 use year. Therefore you must use 2003 year points for that vacation.

There are three ways to get points into a use year: (1) The regular points that will be alloted to that year. (2) Points from a previous year that are banked into the following year. (3) Points from a following year that are borrowed into a previous year.

So 2003 points can come from (1) Your regular 2003 allocation, (2) Banked 2002 points, or (3) Borrowed 2004 points.

You cannot borrow 2005 points and put them into your 2003 use year as you can only bank or borrow one year away. 2005 points could only be borrowed and put into a 2004 use year which would be good for a vacation date Sep 1, 2004 through Aug 31, 2005.

It appears you've already borrowed all but 100 of your 2004 points. I'm assuming you have no 2003 points left, nor banked 2002 points. This means you only have 100 points available if you want to take a June 2004 vacation.

Keep in mind if you can move your vacation dates from June, 2004 to to September, 2004 instead, then that vacation is in your 2004 use year instead of your 2003 use year. You could use your remaining 2004 points, plus you could borrow any 2005 points you needed to make a reservation for September 2004.
