I am planning a trip in June in which I'll use the rest of my points for 2009, plus I'll need to borrow a few from my 2010 points. My UY is December. Well, we have discussed the possibility of a trip in December as well. But, would I be able to book for December with the rest of my borrowed points for 2010 and then, since by the time of the trip (December) also borrow a few from 2011?

I know. It's a lot of borrowing. I wish I could swing some add-on points, but my kids will be out of the house soon :sad2: and then maybe all this borrowing nonsense will slow down some...:rolleyes1

Thanks! Kim

If I understand your vacation scenario correctly, you should be able to do this. It's always possible to borrow points from the use year following the one the reservation dates are in.

Yes, that will work for you. With a December Use Year you can use your 2009 points and borrowed 2010 points for trips between December 1, 2009 and November 30, 2010. You can use the remainder of your 2010 points and borrow 2011 points for trips between December 1, 2010 and November 30, 2011.

Enjoy! :)

Great! I knew I could use them, but I wasn't sure they'd let me make reservations using points so far ahead! I love DIS!! Here's a banana dance just for you guys!

Just to clarify -
You have a June 2009 trip made with Dec 2009 points. Correct?

Or are you planning a June 2010 trip made with the rest of your Dec 2009 points and some Dec 2010 points?

Dec UYs are always a bit confusing because you don't get your points until the very end of the year that they are named for. So you got Dec 2008 points a few months ago and will be getting Dec 2009 points in a little over nine months.

If your trip is this June (2009) then you are still in your 2008 use year and you would be using 2008 use years points and maybe some borrowed 2009 points as well. Your 2009 points come to you on December 2009. You cannot borrow from 2010 until after December 2009. I have a December use year as well and it does get confusing. For our trip this August I used our remaining 2008 points as well as some points borrowed from 2009. As for a trip in December, you could borrow some 2010 points to cover that if you do not have enough 2009 points left.

Your 2009 UY starts December 1, 2009, thus June of 2009 is in your 2008 UY. You could not borrow 2010 UY points for that vacation.

Yes, this is the case. My trip is this June and I'm using the rest of my 2008 points and a few of my 2009 points. So, you're saying that if I book another trip for this December, then I'll need to wait until December to actually book the room to borrow from my 2010 points? :confused3 Even though I'll be using them once my 2009 year starts? I'm sorry this blonde gets confused very easily! :rolleyes1

Obviously, I like your answer better... :goodvibes

Thanks again for helping to clarify for me!

Another borrowing question :

If I had 2 50 pt contracts, am I allowed to make 1 transfer/yr on each contract, or just 1 total transfer for the entire year ?

Reason I ask is that I'm looking at buying into DVC in the 100 pt range, and although I know I will most likely be able to get a lower per point cost buying a 100 pt contract, the additional flexibility of multiple contracts may be worth paying up for.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

TO CLARIFY:
You are using 2008 and 2009 points for your booked June vacation. Your 2009 December vacation would use the remainder of your 2009 points plus any points from your 2010 use year that you might need to borrow. You do NOT want to wait to book that December trip though. You may already be a bit late for booking early December even now. I'd be on the phone today booking that December trip if I were you.

WHEN you book has nothing to do with your use year and EVERYTHING to do with the date of your stay. You are able to book December, 2009 11 months from the date of expected check in....What points you use is determined by what you have available in that or the next use year. In other words, the use year of the STAY, not the current use year when you make the call.

Make yourself a little chart. You don't say how many points you own, so let's use round numbers to make it easy to see.

2008 points (200) Used for reservations from 12/01/08-11/30/09

2009 points(200- the points borrowed into 2008) for res. 12/01/09-11/30/10

2010 points(200 - points borrowed into 2009) for res. 12/01/10-11/30/11)

If you borrow say 20 points from '09, you will then have 180 points available for that December vacation PLUS any you need to borrow from your '10 use year. You can borrow up to the whole allotment, so for that Dec. trip, you would have 180 plus 200 or 380 points available to use. Of course, that would mean NO trip at all again until 12/01/11.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know. I was hoping that it was all about when I USED the points and not when I booked them. :yay: Who knows if December will work out, but at least I know I have the option.... Of course, at this point, the chances of finding rooms available is pretty slim!

If you have two 50 points MASTER contracts, you can transfer between them or in or out of them once a UY. If they are truly master contracts, you can't combine points from both contracts to book a single night without using a transfer between them.

For example, a night requires 25 points to book. You have 13 points in one Master contract and 12 points in another. You would either have to transfer from one to the other to get 25 points OR borrow from your next year to get enough points for that single night. You can't use 12 from one and 13 from the other to book that single night.

Add-ons are different as they are one Master contract, not multiple. If you have a 50 point Master and a 50 point add-on, you can combine these points to make a single night, but there is only one opportunity a year to transfer in or out.
