If I borrow points for a reservation and cancel the trip do I lose those points or can they still be banked?

If you cancel 31 days or more prior to check in, the borrowed points are returned to your account, but they cannot be returned to their original use year. They expire at the end of the use year into which they were borrowed.

If you cancel 30 days or less prior to arrival, the points are returned to your account in holding status. They can only be used to book a stay that is no more than 60 days in the future and they still expire at the end of the use year into which they were borrowed.

Thank you, I guess I should have not booked that spring break trip unless I was 100% certain I was going. Worst case sinero I have to use all points next Oct for bigger room I guess. So much for spontaneous dreaming!

Borrowing is definitely something you want to think about in terms of how definite your plans will be.

Hopefully, though, you will not have to cancel entirely and can still make it work!

Keep in mind that if you borrow next year's points in combination with using this UY's points, if you cancel only part of the reservation you can ask them to put back in your account the points from the current UY which would mean you could bank those points.
