Borrowing points when booking out of order

Can someone let me know if this is possible? Assume for the sake of argument that there is no borrowing restriction.

Beginning balance of points:
2021: 200
2022: 200
2023: 200

I book Reservation 1 for 2022 using my home resort booking window. The stay costs 250 points. I still plan on using my 2021 points, so I borrow 50 2023 points.

Balance after making Reservation 1:
2021: 200
2022: 0
2023: 150

Now, I want to book Reservation 2 in 2021. It costs 250 points as well, but I have no 2022 points to borrow. Is the system smart enough to let me change Reservation 1 to borrow an additional 50 2023 points so that I can borrow 2022 points for Reservation 2?

Balance after making Reservation 2:
2021: 0
2022: 0
2023: 100

No. The system is not that smart.

But, you could make a dummy reservation that borrows 50 2023 points into your 2022 UY. Do that after making Reservation #1.

Then cancel the dummy reservation. The borrowed points stay in 2022.

Now, modify Reservation #1 without making any changes. The nor-so-smart booking system is actually smart enough to use borrowed points before current points. This would free up 50 2022 points.

Now you can borrow those 50 2022 points into 2021 to make Reservation #2.

Once booked, the system will not automatically change anything and it’s probably a good thing.

People do things are different reasons and leave certain points alone sometimes for a future trip.

But, the solution is as suggested. It just takes a few extra steps

This isn't entirely true. People told me that too, and I tried multiple times and it didn't work. I ended up contacting MS to do it for me, which they were able to.

I've never had it not work but you have to follow the modification process to the end. The website will appear to take the same points which were originally used but if there are borrowed points in the contract previously used, those borrowed points will get used before the current points.

Same here. Always works and I end up with all points borrowed or banked taken.
