So, for our upcoming reservation I had to borrow points, but I might still be able to get a room that would use less points.

Do the borrowed points stay with the reservation I borrowed them for? For instance, if I cancel a reservation that I didn't borrow points for will I be able to bank those points, or will they make them the borrowed points?

Also, if my the room option I want becomes available what is the best option to book it and unbook the reservation that it is replacing? Do I have to cancel the reservation I don't want, and then go in to try to book the one I do want? It makes me nervous to cancel something only to have the room I want possibly get booked up and then I get nothing.

Borrowed points stay in the UY they were borrowed. Borrowing is a final transaction. There is no returning borrowed points to their previous UY. What you need to do when you get the reservation that requires fewer points is call MS and ask them to make sure they use the borrowed points first and then bank the leftover current year points (unless you are too late to bank them - then you lose them unless you use them).

You have to have the points to make a reservation. So if you don't have enough points to book both reservations, you have to cancel the first then book the other one. But, if it is a hard to book time or location, you could lose the second before you can book it while canceling the first. You could wait and call MS, but even they have lost the second while they were cancelling the first. I think supervisors can do it, but not MS CMs can. And you lose the one hour of time between booking online and calling MS.

No, they will not become borrowed points if they were not borrowed points to begin with. However, they will remain in the UY that they were in to begin with. IOW, if they were 2016 points banked into 2017, they will still be in your 2017 UY and you will not be able to bank them into 2018. If they are 2017 UY points and you are beyond your banking window when you cancel, you will not be able to bank them into 2018.

You can use the two-browser method to cancel the first reservation while concurrently booking the new reservation using a different browser. It's not fool-proof but neither is going thru MS to make the change. The advantage would be if you're trying to book a hard-to-get reservation that has opened up. Doing it online is quicker than trying to get thru to MS. The delay in reaching a human at MS could cost you that reservation.

Can I call MS and have them relocate points for an existing reservation?

For instance, if I have a reservation that used 2017 points could I call and ask them to switch the points to the borrowed ones? Can they do this without cancelling the reservation and rebooking?

You can call, chat or email MS to have points reallocation done. You need to be very specific as to how you want this done. IOW, you might ask them to reallocation the points so that XXX points borrowed from 2019 are used for the existing reservation #1234567890 instead of XXX points from the 2018 UY.
