Hello, I just passed ROFR so I am new to this. We have a December use year. If I borrow points for a Thanksgiving trip for 2016 and then cancel, what use year do those points belong to? and when would they have to be used by? Since they are borrowed points, if I cancel within my 4 months banking window, that would not matter right or would my borrowed 2016 points that I would be getting Dec. 1, 2016 need to be used by Nov. 30, 2016 or Nov. 31 2017?

Nov 2016 is in your Dec 2015 UY. So you can use current 2015 UY pts + banked 2014 UY pts (if any) + borrowed 2016 UY pts (if needed) for that stay. If you cancel that stay, all pts drop back into your 2015 UY and will expire on Nov 30, 2016 if not used for a stay by that date.

Canceling within your banking window gives you the option to bank forward any current UY pts in that reservation, but banked/borrowed pts will remain stuck in their "new" UY.

To add to chalee94, If you cancel 30 days out the points will go into holding.

If you borrow the points to use during your 2015 use year (which contains Thanksgiving of 2016) then the points will expire on Nov 30, 2016. If you cancel at less than 30 days out then your points go into holding and have a different set of rules for using them. If you cancel before your banking window (by July 31st) than any 2015 points you are using can be banked but the 2016 points you borrowed need to be used by Nov 30th, 2016. If you cancel after July 31st than all of the points will expire on Nov 30, 2016. Traveling at the end of your use year is a lot more dangerous for losing points if you have to cancel. you can buy insurance that will cover the maintenance cost of the points if you cancel and can't use them but you must purchase it for each use year's worth of points you are using.

I would have already used my 2015 points so I would need to borrow 2016.

Thanks this makes sense. I figured we would only go during Thanksgiving very rarely but yes it being only a week before my use year could be dangerous. I think renting the reservation would be easier if it ever came to that.

If you borrow Dec 2016 points they then become 2015 points and remain that way if you cancel (then must be used by Nov 30, 2016). If you cancel 30 days or less from check in date, they become holding points where you can only use them to book 2 months out (nearly impossible with DVC).

can transferred points be banked?
You cannot transfer points that are already borrowed or banked but you can bank them once they are transferred. And you will not see transferred points online (member website) but will need to call MS to use them.

sorry for all the questions but do the transferred points belong to your user year or the person you borrowed from?
