Hi. I am considering borrowing points from my Oct 24 UY for travel in Feb 24. My questions are….what happens to those points if I have to cancel the trip and is there any travel insurance option?

TIA,
Dee

If you cancel that trip, borrowed points will stay in the UY of the trip and will need to be used by September 30, 2024.

If you cancel 30 days or less from checkin, all points whether borrowed, banked or current will go into Holding and can be used only for reservations booked 60 days or less from checkin and will also expire September 30, 2024.

Check the member website for the travel insurance DVC offers. The cost is based on UY of the points being used, so if your proposed trip used 2023 points and also borrowed 2024 points, you’d have to pay 2 years’ premiums. I believe it reimburses only the dues on the lost points, and it may cover other nonrefundable travel costs, but I’m not certain of that.

Thanks. Just to make sure I understand this, if we cancel more than 30 days the points stay as II reservation points? Or, do they come back to my account as DVC resort points? I cannot get MS today, the recording says they are booking Disney Treasure reaervations only today.

Oh, were you talking about an II exchange? Sorry, I didn’t realize that. Points deposited to II stay there; I don’t know what happens if you make an exchange and then cancel it, whether you get any points back or not. Points used for cruises, Adventures by Disney and hotels do become Reservation Points, but I believe that II exchanges might be different. The Buyers Guide is here https://disneyvacationclub.disney.g...nal/23-LR-0309-2_Disney_Final_CaseyStrong.pdf ( you might have to log in). Hopefully it says something in the first few pages.

And here’s what the member website says under Plan Vacation on the main pages is the cancellation policy for villas exchanges - you can cancel 7 days in advance and have 2 years to make another exchange

Good luck!

I would be interested in the answers for future reference.

Interval International does have vacation protection that you can purchase. Generally, using DVC points for an II exchange is not a good value unless you are going somewhere great. Where are you planning to exchange into? You may do better to rent the points out for cash and use the cash to book something where you want to go.

That's generally good advice, but some people don't want the hassle/risk to rent out points.

I do apologize. I only realized I didnt specify that after reading your post. I also must admit I should have done some research on the member site before posting. The info you provided is very much appreciated.

I am debating using II for a trade for my husband and myself. He tends to change his mind on longer flights than HH or FL, I will dig in and see where I wind up.

Have a great day!
