Borrowed points question

My use year starts June 1. I borrowed 155 from my 2016/17 use year to make a reservation for March 2016 which is in my 15/16 use year. If I have to cancel, the points will return to the use year the res was made correct? and will expire at the end of the 15/16 use year? If so do I have to use and travel before my current use yeAr ends? Or can I make a reservation for a future date in 16/17. Sorry so confusing.

You are correct about the points returning to the use year where the reservation was made. Those points do have to be used, not just booked, before the end of the use year.

Your banking deadline is January 31st. If you cancel before then, you can bank the current-year points into next year, and then you'll only have the borrowed points stuck with only a few months to use. You'll see lots of people talk about your use year being important when making a purchasing decision. This type of late-year reservation, with the possibility of canceling, is where the use year really matters.

If you cancel, as long as you are not within 30 days of the reservation, the points will stay in the UY into which they were borrowed. They will expire at the end of the UY into which the points were borrowed. If you cancel the reservation you can make and complete a reservation with those borrowed points before May 30, 2016.
If you cancel the reservation within 30 days of the reservation date then Holding Points rules come into play

Think of banking and borrowing as changing the points UY and restricting them so that they can't be banked or borrowed again.

Just to clarify. The normal calendar has nothing to do with your UY. So you don't have a 2016/2017 UY. Only a 2016 UY and 2017 UY. Your calendar starts in June.

March 2016 falls in your June 2015 UY. You borrowed points from your June 2016 UY. They will expire on May 31, 2106.
