I watch CNN and it is so sad, I have to change the channel. So many tragedies and hurt people, so sad.

according to the email sent out today from our church, the texas baptist men's relief org, has teams already in the area and more teams in place and ready to go when they get the word where to go, they will be providing thousands of meals each day in multiple locations, and thay said right now the biggest need is monetary donations, our bible fellowship class is adopting a family to assist with provisions at their temporary residence. and the church is making arrangements with one of the staffs retreat center to use facilities as a shelter for widows and their children displaced by the storm. so they are saying that immediately cash donations are needed for efforts such as this to get off the ground. i think that would be true of the red cros as well, as the president said today during his address, and i think they would be a worhty organization for donations.

We must uphold in prayer all the victims, those doing the relief work, and all those in authority to do the right thing.. Once again the American people must show their love of God and country and reach out to those in need.

Well, I happen to live in MS which is one of the states that was hit by Katrina. We live all the way up north and to the east of the state though. We don't live very far from Alabama (maybe 20 min.) and only an hour and a half from Memphis, TN. We are nowhere near the coast so I knew we wouldn't get the worst of the hurricane but we did get some nasty weather. So nasty in fact that all of the walmarts, schools, daycares, and many local businesses ended up closing for a day or 2. You know it's bad when walmart closes! In all the years I have lived here I have never known walmart to close during bad weather. I used to work at walmart and one year a tornado came through and they refused to close the store so when it hit we (employees and customers alike) were huddled in the middle of the store praying for the best. Thankfully we were all fine. But anyway, I did get pretty nervous when I heard Walmart was closing! The rain was bad and the wind was unbelievable but we were fine. Lots of trees and limbs knocked down but thankfully nothing on our street. I was told almost 100% of the state lost power! My mom lost power for 2 days and she lives an hour away from me and even closer to Memphis than we do. Can you believe we never even lost our power? I guess God blessed us b/c we were so unprepared and we have a 4 month old so it would have been unbearably hot w/o electricity and if we had lost our water it would have been bad b/c dd is formula fed. But even that would have been minor compared to what some of the people to the south of us were and still are going through! I can't believe how bad it is! I know the other day they were saying atleast 30 people in MS were killed and 1000s in NO...not sure about AL. I watched some of the footage on tv and just cried! In some ways it was like reliving 9/11 all over again! And then the looters...unbelievable! That made me furious! But anyway, we are fine and so is all of our family but my heart goes out to those who did suffer or lose loved ones or their homes! Yesterday people in our state panicked and we ran out of gas. So I won't be going anywhere until more gas arrives I guess. But that's okay b/c we are safe, healthy, and have a home. My MIL is a nurse and she and several other nurses were planning to head to NO to help out but were told due to the gas shortage that they could only get $25 each for all of the vehicles so I am not sure if she went or not. Dh hasn't talked to her today. She was planning to go if she could find some gas somewhere. Like I said all of the areas around us were out of gas and when they do get some her employer will only fill the company vehicles with $25 worth. I hope she was able to go. Although I will say the silliest little things upset her so I can't imagine how she will hold up during a real tragedy such as this. I pray she will keep it together until she is through helping those that need it though! Anyway, just thought I would update on how things are here...and we aren't even on the coast! I can't even imagine how much worse it is in the southern part of the state! My prayers to any of you that were affected!

I rejoice that you are all right. Here in soutern California the televion stations with the Red Cross and Salvation Army have been collecting money, and other corpoarte donations for the hurricane victims.
You are all in my prayers.

I completely agree! As someone who lives in one of the states that suffered from Katrina and is surrounded by the other 2 states that suffered it really makes me furious when I hear some so-called Christian saying that this was a punishment from God and that these people deserve to suffer! If that is true then why are innocent babies and children suffering? I have a 4 month old and I can assure you she has done nothing to deserve a punishment like Katrina and I know none of those infants in NO or southern MS deserve it either! I was finally able to get gas today and the couple in front of us had evacuated from NO. They were simply happy to be alive! I doubt they deserved to lose their home more than any of us did. We are all sinners. Why do I still have a home and others don't? I seriously tend to question the "Christianity" of those that write off natural disasters as God's wrath and feel those that suffered and died deserved it. What kind of Christian is truly that cold and uncaring?! I lived in the town in MS that was hit really hard by a tornado in Feb. 2001. It just missed my house! But quite a few people lost their homes and 5 people died. We were given virtually no warning of a tornado coming! We lost power and the tornado siren did not reach our part of town. We did not evacuate to a shelter b/c we honestly did not know we needed to. Nor did any of those who died or lost their homes! One of the ones that died was a 10 year old boy who was celebrating his b-day at his home with friends. I am sorry, but I truly have a hard time believing that God thought it was necessary to send a tornado to kill a 10 year old boy for his "sins"! I don't believe God is that cruel. I am not directing this at anyone on this thread and I have been staying off the DIS more the past few days as I can't stand to read the threads on here right now. We have quite a few shelters in my town that are taking in those from the southern part of our state as well as NO, etc. It is such a sad thing to witness and I can't believe people could be cold enough to say these people deserved it! It gives Christians a bad name and really makes me furious! These people have lost everything! Instead of saying they deserve it perhaps we should have some compassion. I am sure God would appreciate that more, don't you think? Again, not directing this at anyone on here. I am just an emotional wreck over this today. I just can't stand seeing the suffering babies and it is so much worse when I think about my baby and how it could have been her if we lived a bit further south in the state. It just tears me up! Please continue to pray for those in my state and the surrounding states!

I read the article, and if I remember correctly
when I first got saved my pastor (who was instrumental in my salvation)
grew concerned when I subscribed to the free "Plain Truth" magazine.
I cannot confirm it, but after reading the article
and the frames around it i.e. "Speaking the Plain Truth"
I am assuming this is the same organization.
Long story short, they are well-known as a cult
in evangelical circles, and yes that's the word that is used - cult.

Clearly, God already sent his own son to die for our sins so the idea that some people would believe this shows definitively that they do not undestand the whole meaning of Christianity.

My prayers continue for everyone involved in this terrible tragedy. I’m so upset and twisted in so many directions by this terrible event. I don’t even know how to feel right now—I’m a mix of sadness, anger, lack of understanding, disbelief, hope, questioning, etc.

Cristy, thank you for sharing the words to that beautiful song. It was actually played at the funeral of a family friend of ours many years ago, and it was so moving. Sometimes we don’t understand why God allows things to happen, but I know His love is real.

Tasha, I am so glad that you and your loved ones are safe! We too have a gas shortage because people panicked. It’s not as bad here as it is there though.

Agreed. As I said, I didn't really think anyone here was actually agreeing w/it. It just is irritating that people write articles like that or think that way!

Thanks, Elisabeth! Like I said, we suffered absolutely no damage so we are 100% okay. My concern lies with those that live further south and to the west of us. And I am feeling a lot of the same emotions that you are right now.

Quick blessing: As some of you know, we had a water line break on our front lawn a few weeks ago, long story short-we had to rip up our whole front lawn, and driveway. It is a huge bill. Insurance is covering some of it. We ordered sod, it was to be here thursday for $600. A guy who did some work on ripping up our lawn came by this morning, and gave enough sod for our whole lawn. For FREE!!

Hubby had laid the black dirt yesterday, and had it all ready for when the sod was to come, he spent all day out there yesterday, doing the back-breaking labor, shoveling, leveling, getting it ready. And it was ready when the sod came today!!

We got grass from Heaven!! Thank you Jesus!!
