Borders return policy

Yesterday I was with my DD (24) at Borders. She needed to exchange a book that she had bought the day before because it was defective. (This was a book that she is using to tutor a home-bound student.) Three of the pages were folded in half and then bound into the book so that you couldn't open them. The clerk said that they don't do exchanges so they would need to return it and repurchase it. Fine. The problem was that she used "borders bucks" as part of her payment. The clerk went on to say that she would loose them and now had to pay the extra $5.00.

We patiently tried to explain that we only wanted an exchange because they book that they had sold the previous day was defective. She wouldn't budge. We then asked to speak to a manager. The manager said the same thing. They don't do exchanges. After arguing a few minutes, in a huff, the manager pushed the book towards DD and said "Just take it but I won't ever do this again!".

I'm not sure if this is company policy or just our store that's being a pain.

Last week when DD was in there, a different clerk refused to give her the "teacher discount" even though DD showed him her picture ID from the school that she teaches at. He then said "You're not old enough to be a teacher". She pulled out her drivers licenses showing that she's 24yo. He reluctantly gave it to her after that.

I'd probably be writing a letter to Borders corporate and then not ever shopping there again. I hope she got the names of the employees who "helped" her.

That doesn't sound typical. Maybe just a rude and uninformed staff at that store. I am a plus rewards member and use Borders Bucks all the time. Whenever I have needed to exchange or refund an item, I have not had any problems. If the Borders Bucks are not expired, you should be able to use them again.

And Borders corporate is probably wondering why it is failing when Barnes & Noble is doing so well.

Borders is teetering on bankruptcy and a whole slew of stores are slated to be closed. Publishers are starting to withhold stock due to non-payment and they can't get their debt re-financed.

Chances are pretty good that by the end of 2011 none of us will be shopping at Borders anymore.

But as for right now, their management is under considerable pressure to cut costs drastically.

I've read this too. It's probably a good idea for everybody to use those remaining Borders Bucks you may have been saving.

Crudmonkeys! Glad to read this now. Kids got Borders GC for Christmas so they better spend them soon!

Good thing I signed up for there Borders card the other day then....NOT!:headache:

Well that explains a lot.

We tried to exchange a book at Borders right after Christmas and they wouldn't let us. We didn't have the receipt so I kind of understand, but it had a Border sticker on the book so they knew it was purchased there. All we wanted was in store credit to pick something else, and I would have been fine if they didn't give us full price. I didn't want to ask for the receipt from the person who had given the book to my DS for Christmas.

Barnes and Noble has always let us exchange without a reciept. They are so friendly in there. I would much rather shop there.

That was rude of them....I love our borders store though.I have never had trouble exchanging even without a receipt. The only problem i had was I ordered a few books in the store and they mailed ONE but the other took a month! Then when I got it I was shocked to see a comic book! lol the order was for a BOOK and it said BOOK..even the store said that they could not see anywhere that said comic or graphic novel..they offered my money back but i asked for a gc so i could buy another book.
I like books...real books not online or book readers.I trade them with my girlfriends.I would write them and let them know what is going on.I really hope they do not go out of buisness,it is the only real bookstore we have and my dd5 loves going there and hanging out during the week.

I use Borders all the time. I have not upgraded my membership...as the reason we started using Borders instead of B&N was the free membership. I love using their coupons and getting discounts. I rarely have to return an item, but when I have, I haven't had a problem. Sorry that happened to you OP.

that makes me sad. I love Borders. They always have a way better selection than B&N and ours has always had a much friendlier staff and people who actually know things about books. I've yet to find a B&N store that lives up to our Borders. Our is doing really well. Apparently they have been making more and more money each year, having only been open about 4 years.

Our Borders was shut down last week. Borders is the likeliest buyer for B & N, which is currently up for sale.

You can Google a bunch more info on it but basically a Venture Capital firm that is invested in Borders wants to sink some more money in and then merge Border and Barnes and Noble into one company - most likely with Borders being the surviving brand.

Here's one on the likely Borders bankruptcy

http://www.annarbor.com/business-re...-or-bankruptcy-filing-inevitable-expert-says/

I heard that this idea was dead. I believe the current situation is that Borders has assured the publishers that they have a refinancing strategy in place. The publishers have requested more details as to their refinancing plans. Also, Borders is being encouraged to seek bankruptcy protection - not to completely shut down, but to shed leasing contracts of underperforming stores that way they can emerge in better financial footing.

At this point, things can go in a number of directions.

Last year my same DD tried to return some unopened board games that my sister had given her for Christmas. They just weren't the type that she thought that she would be able to use in her classroom. They had the B&N stickers on them and they wouldn't do anything without the receipt. Even after getting the receipt, they wouldn't do the return because it was purchased more than 10 days earlier. This was Jan 2nd so it was within days for Christmas but not 10 days of when they were bought.

Looks like she's running out of book stores.:scared1: She'll have to plan ahead and order what she needs from the library.
