Yesterday I was with my DD (24) at Borders. She needed to exchange a book that she had bought the day before because it was defective. (This was a book that she is using to tutor a home-bound student.) Three of the pages were folded in half and then bound into the book so that you couldn't open them. The clerk said that they don't do exchanges so they would need to return it and repurchase it. Fine. The problem was that she used "borders bucks" as part of her payment. The clerk went on to say that she would loose them and now had to pay the extra $5.00.
We patiently tried to explain that we only wanted an exchange because they book that they had sold the previous day was defective. She wouldn't budge. We then asked to speak to a manager. The manager said the same thing. They don't do exchanges. After arguing a few minutes, in a huff, the manager pushed the book towards DD and said "Just take it but I won't ever do this again!".
I'm not sure if this is company policy or just our store that's being a pain.
Last week when DD was in there, a different clerk refused to give her the "teacher discount" even though DD showed him her picture ID from the school that she teaches at. He then said "You're not old enough to be a teacher". She pulled out her drivers licenses showing that she's 24yo. He reluctantly gave it to her after that.

She'll have to plan ahead and order what she needs from the library.
