Borders Filed Chapter 11 on Feb 16

This came as no surprise in our area because our local media has been predicting it since last Fall. In fact, they issued warnings to use your Borders Gift Cards back around Christmas and again just a few weeks ago. From what I've read, they are closing all of their "Superstores".

They have attributed Borders decline to their slow move to online sales and ebooks. Also, Borders does not own their ebook, Kobo. It is a partnership, which means they only get a portion of the profits from Kobo.

Our town's Borders is not closing. Barnes & Noble was supposed to build a store, but cancelled their plans a few months ago. I suspect if B&N were moving in, we would've lost our Borders. Our Borders is the only real bookstore in town, but it's a mess and understaffed.

They closed the Borders store in Marlton, NJ around the first of the year- it's not even on the list as it is already gone.

I must admit I am among those who prefer online shopping.
I went to Borders on occasion, but go to B&N more frequently- both in the same town, maybe 2 miles apart. I wasn't surprised to hear Borders was closing.

<in a little mimicking voice>

"Isnt there a B&N near the Container Store?"

Makes me hateful....just hateful.

Wow. The little sunburn on the nose gloating and now this. You are have a cold, cold heart Mr Klose.

On the flip side.....

I'm going to see John Pinette tonight and your not.

Of course, the irony is that, 5 years or so ago, when a Borders or B&N opened, the competition drove many home town book stores out of business.

Wasn't there a movie about this?

Yep, dumb movie, but a movie. You've Got Mail.

And I lost a couple good home town bookstores too. One of the hold outs just closed a few weeks ago.

After moving away from a great Borders store a few years ago, I really missed it and kept hoping they would build one near where I live now. Guess not, and now they're losing the one I liked too. I feel bad for the employees, they were a great group from what I could see. :sad1:

Can't you guys play nice? There are enough Container Stores for everyone...

(I'm obviously missing the point somewhere!)

Sayhello

i remember when the very first Borders opened in Ann Arbor (back when i was in high school)..
it was very different from what it turned into....(it was used and rare books back then - a little niche market store)..
but i still love borders, even in its mass marketing format....

(never was big on B&N)....

I wonder how many of those busy stores are making many sales. A lot of people go into the stores to grab a coffee and page through books or magazines before ordering those books from Amazon.

How do you know this? My stores are always busy at the checkout. :confused3

I just rechecked the list and the brand new two floor Borders in the mall I used to go to by my parents' house is closing. I can't believe it. That's a huge space!

Two stores are closing in South Florida. I never go to Borders, I am a BN person. Love the Nook!!

Of this....I am envious.

Hope he makes you laugh until your cheeks hurt.:thumbsup2

BTW...I was agreeing with you. I wish we had a Container Store.

Sorry  I thought you had a Container and were taunting me further. :teeth:

And, my cheeks DO hurt...I don't think I have ever laughed so hard. At certain points I couldn't breath. It was awesome! :thumbsup2

Isn't there some kind of rule in the TOS about using Kevin's "Neener Neener" smiley to "Neener Neener" Kevin himself?

For anyone who didn't get the email, here's the link to the list of Borders stores that are slated for closure:
Chapter 11 Store Closure List

Wow - the store in Garden State Plaza is closing? That store is usually quite busy.

I'm glad to see the store in Rockaway NJ & the one on Route 23 in Riverdale aren't - those are the two I get to most often.

And sad... the store in downtown Saratoga Springs, NY is slated to close. Another big change for Broadway. To be honest, that one blew me away when I visited last fall (for the first time in a long while.) I remember when Pope's Pizza was on that corner, and seeing a big chain bookstore in the same spot was just weird. At any rate, that's a pretty significant piece of Broadway real estate. I guess that more people go to the B&N by the mall.

Wow - in some areas it looks like it would be easier to list the stores that were remaining instead of listing all those closing.

I got that email and then another one a day later that they were closing the St. Peters store. It is sad, more people losing jobs

I love Borders. I'm a Gold Card member and I'm glad to learn that my two Buffalo area stores will remain open, for now anyway.

One thing I have noticed though, since the official Chapter 11 announcement, is that I'm not getting as many coupons in my e-mail as before. I used to get what seemed like 2 a week, but haven't gotten one since the announcement.

Maybe it's just a coincidence. We'll have to wait and see.

I noticed that too. I got at least two a week, I don't think I got any last week.
