Hi,

My DD7 is in first grade and was put in the "book project" group. They won't quite do a book report - more like a broken down report with an art project involving the main character. They're supposed to read a picture book or a short chapter book. Does anyone know of some good books at this level. She does read very well - she wants to do a Junie B Jones book which she can read, but tends to tire and ask me to read a page or two. While I certainly don't mind her reading those books, I don't know if it's a good idea for her project because I'm not sure she comprehends it all while she's reading (make sense? :confused3 ). Plus, I don't know if that is a short chapter book.

There are many picture books, but I don't know what's considered age and educationally appropriate. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

did she ever read flat stanley??? my son loved that book and did a report on in 1st grade

The Magic Tree House books have great themes.

Henry and Mudge books are easy first grade books

1st grade teacher here...

How about one of the Frog & Toad books? '
If you're daughter is an advanced reader, it might be a little easy for her to read, but she shouldn't tire while reading it. She should be able to finish it in a day.

If you're looking for something more difficult....I recommend one of the Arthur chapter books.

I say let her do Junie B Jones. ;) It is hard enough to get the kids to read and having one she is excited about is half of the battle.

Junie B Jones is a short chapter book.:thumbsup2

Now you could get a couple of other books and have her look through them. She might stick to something else she sees.....Kind of like "sneakily" encouraging something you think would be better.;)

I agree.

And if she tires, don't be afraid to read a page or 2 here and there. She's still reading most of it, and she won't get burned out on reading chapter books. I took turns Page by Page with my older daughter for a while. Then I changed it to 2 pages by 2 pages, then 4 by 4 until she wasn't tired by long books.

My daughter loves Dr. Seuss books.

We have a new reader section in our library--color coded...they do have simple chapter books (where it is about 2 pages per chapter..something like that). So you might be able to check with them.

How about the Cam Jansen book series? They are about at that level and tend to appeal to girls. They are a little easier to read than Junie B.

Other than that, I'd go with the Flat Stanley.:thumbsup2

I think you are referring to the Young Cam Jansen books. I think the regular Cam Jansen are about the same as Junie B. Either way my kids love both.

Junie B is great, Magic Tree House, Flat Stanley (may be too old fashioned), Henry and Mudge..these have all been mentioned.

Arthur books are great as well. My son liked the Scooby Doo easy chapter books in 1st grade.
