Hi All:yay:

I am looking for suggestions for books for my 9 yr. old daughter. What do you all recommend?
She has read the Magic Tree House series and Diary of a Wimpy Kid...I am at a loss of what to buy. Any help would be great!

My DD(almost 9) likes to read:
any and all American Girl books
some of the Beverly Cleary Beezus/Ramona series (although doesn't enjoy as much as DS did at that age)
books about travel, foreign lands, languages, animals, the human body
Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing/Fudge series
poetry especially Shel Silverstein

I work in the library at my DD's school. These books are checked out contantly:

Judy Moody books by Megan Mcdonald
Books by Andrew Clements
Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo (might be easy for her)
Flat Stanley
The Saddle Club books
Henry the Cowdog
Nancy Drew books

I hope this helps.

my dd9 just started reading the Nancy Drew books and seems to really like them, also the fairy books.. there is a series...

My DD9 loves to read - I could probably go on and on listing books that she loves. Here are some that immediately come to mind:

The Harry Potter series
The Boxcar Children series
Anything by Beverly Cleary
The Moffatts, The Middle Moffat, Rufus M., Ginger Pye, Pinky Pye - all by Eleanor Estes
The Tale of Despereaux and Because of Winn Dixie - Kate DCamillo
Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swan - EB White
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
Clementine and The Talented Clementine by Sara Pennypacker
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and The Best School Year Ever - Robinson
Fudge series by Judy Blume
Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix (also Running Out of Time)
Puppy Place series by Ellen Miles (easy reads, but cute and she loves dogs)
Ghosthunters series by Cornelia Funke
Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Peter and the Starcatchers and the two sequels (Shadow Thieves and Secret of Rundoon) - Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
The Phantom Tollbooth
Roald Dahl - Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Captain Underpants - Dav Pilkey
Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls - Meg Cabot
A Wrinkle in Time (has not read the other books in the series)
Chronicles of Narnia

She is getting the first two books in the 39 Clues series for Christmas, along with Rowling's Tales of Beedle the Bard.

She could probably name 100 more, but this might get you started. Hope it helps! :goodvibes

Wow - those are pretty much all of the same books that I would have listed for my daughter! Weird...

Mine likes to read anything she can get her hands on. In addition to the ones above, she likes Astrid Lindgrin books (especially Pippi Longstocking), just finished Bridge to Terebithia and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and is starting to get into Nancy Drew. She also loves all of the Fairies books (we get them from the Scholastic book sale sheets that come home from school). For Christmas she is getting the Wimpy Kid book (did you know there are more of them?) and some other mysteries.

My DD8 is a great reader and she loves Louisa May Alcott. At the book store, we bought the abridged version of "Little Women". She's read about 8 times already! They have other classics in the abridged versions for an easier read. Her teacher recommended that we get the kids interested in non-fiction books too. There is a great section in Barnes and Noble.

At about the same level as Magic Tree House are the Fairy books (there are colour fairies, pet fairies, etc. They're all called things like "Holly the Christmas Fairy"). Right now my dd is working her way through the Harry Potters (on book 6), and absolutely adores them.

Thanks for the great suggestions.. The problem I am having is that she is bored with the Magic Tree house series type books.

I think she needs something more challenging. I will deff. look into the books that you all have listed.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks again

Have they updated the Nancy Drew books?

I still have the hardcover editions from my youth. I started reading the first with my DD and BOY did it sound outdated.

WHAT?!! - Nancy didn't use seat belts? No cell phones to call for help or to let friends know where she was going when she was following a suspect? Lol. :rotfl2:

Some other books not already mentioned my DD 9 has read recently / is reading and loves:

Poppy by Avi (and a lot of his other books)
The Baby mouse series (she loves these - silly, comic book style but really funny)
Chocolate Touch
Sideways Stories from Wayside School
The BFG by Roald Dahl
The young readers versions of Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables, The Little Princess, etc.
I, Freddy by Dietrich Reiche

She also loved the Magic Tree House books

Hope this helps - there's a ton of great books for this age range and I'm starting to really enjoy her books.

My dd9 is starting to get into Little House on the Prairie books, ANimal Ark series (actually anything animal related), Disney fairies books, Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky (she loves poems), Amazing Days of Abby Hayes series, She just got the first Harry Potter book at school but is having a hard time getting into it (she isn't inot that kind of storyline).

She loved the WImpy Kid books, Geronimo Stilton, and comic type books. . She loves Archie comics and also a series called Baby Mouse. Another favorite she constantly gets from school is the Time ALmanac for kids :confused3 .She loves that book....Little does she know she is getting her own version for Christmas...

Also the Magic School Bus chapter books. And any type of joke book you can find.

Shes not too into AMerican Girl books, but I did find one that is about a modern girl who rescues animals so she should like it.
I go to Borders and browse the books (mostly because of the selection)for her age and make a list, then go see if they have them at the library.

I try to make sure my dd is reading books at or slightly above her level, but I will let her get 1 or 2 "lower level" books, just to keep her reading. Nothing wrong with a lighter, easier book sometimes to keep reading from seeming like a chore!

Also don't discount non-fiction books, they may not always be a chapter book, but they can learn a lot....My kids bring home books on all sorts of (sometimes odd) subjects. As long as they are reading, then I have no problem with it.

Roald Dahl- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Sharon Creech- All of hers, but especially Walk Two Moons
C.S. Lewis- the Narnia series
Avi is an excellent author
Andrew Clements- Frindle, The School Story, anything by him

Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle may be one for you two to read together- EXCELLENT!!

DD11 really liked The Tail of Emily Windsnap series. She also like the two longer Disney Fairies books. Pixie Hollow and the Quest for the Egg and Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Wand.

2 others on the top of her list are Ella Enchanted, and The Wish by Gail Levin (I Think).

My dd9 LOVED the Harry Potter series. She has read most of the American Girl books, Emily Windsnap, Disney Fairies, she read the 1st book of Sisters Grim which has some of the Disney characters in them in roles you wouldn't think. I believe Snow White is a teacher. Right now she is reading the Narnia series.

My DD has just turned 10 and is loving reading the Nancy Drew series. Her older sis loved them too and has a ton of them. Should keep little sis busy for a while.

My DD8 loves many of the books already mentioned, but here are a few others:

Frog Princess series by E.D. Baker

Dear America series (she has also read My America series, which is a slightly easier reading level)

I LOVED the Trixie Belden series as a kid and I have them all in a box somewhere. This thread reminded me that I need to pull them out for her!
