I want to get a "typical american" book to send to our Italian friends 5 year old daughter and am looking for some suggestions.

Thanks.

The "Olivia" series by Ian Falconer
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes

My dd loved these books when she was younger

Dr. Seuss of course! Or how about Good Night Moon? Stellaluna? Skippyjon Jones (my five year old son LOVES that one). Or of course there are the Courderoy books. Those are pretty classic "American" books.

The Little Engine That Could (I think I can...I think I can...)

OR

Dr. Seuss's ABC

The Purple Crayon. One of my children's favorites.

ETA- Caps for Sale, Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom, The Velveteen Rabbit, Blueberries for Sal, The Berenstain Bears books are cute

Any of the books in the Arthur series. by Marc Brown

The chapter ones are at a 1st grade reading level but there are ones that aren't chapter.

I loved the Purple Crayon when I was little!

Had to add Where The Wild Things Are. :)

Does the 5 year old read yet?

If this 5 year old does, I would give a 1st grade American leveled book. The reading level is located on the back of the book by the letters RL

She is definitely reading, but I do not think she is reading in english, so I want to keep it simple and fun.

Some great ideas, keep them coming!

Where the Wild Things are would be great-the illlustrations are wonderful and you can pretty much follow the story from them. Same with Caps for Sale and the Run Away Bunny

How about the Junie B. Jones books? They start out with Junie going to Kindergarten and are hilarious to read.

I'd go with "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss because it's phonetic for the most part, easy to read, every American child knows it, and the illustrations are fun.

The only thing bad about those is it is written in the Kindergarten voice and has many misspelled words (on purpose). IMO that would be hard for a child who is learning to read English.

What about the Miss Spider books?
