Booking with Airline Miles - separate reservations?

We are a party of 7. I have enough Delta miles for 4 tickets. Should I make 2 reservations, or can we make 1 reservation and apply the miles to 4 of the tickets? My concern in making 2 reservations is the possibility of being split up if there are schedule changes.

I don’t think you can do that online. I would call reservations to see what they can do.

Last time I did it (with American), I made two reservations but then linked them together by calling reservations.

You'll have to call reservations at some point. If you book them yourself online, they'll have to be two different transactions. Although there is a choice to book with "miles + cash"

That comes up after you put in your search. But I don't think you can decide how many miles you want to apply.

Two different reservations will be fine as long as they're "linked", which reservations can do.

Call in tell them what you want to do and you should end up with 4 tickets on one PNR with points and 3 tickets on a second PNR with cash. Then they will link the two PNRs together. While it is possible to do points+cash bookings it ends up with a very bad exchange rate. You could book both on your own, but you'd still have to call in to have them linked. You may still end up being split if there are schedule changes but if it happens at least the rep will be able to see they are linked and get it fixed. Linking PNRs is pretty much just putting notes in each, the system won't necessarily see that when auto rebooking.
