Booking, Wait List and Losing Points?

My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip for the end of Sept./start of October 2012. We own at BLT but seeing as how we're probably going to be spending a bit of time in our room with an infant would prefer to stay at AKL for the savannah view.

I know that timeframe is super busy for DVC with Food&Wine going on so we were thinking about booking at BLT 11 months out and then trying to switch to AKV when the 7 month window opens up. Can anyone tell me how this would work? Would I be able to waitlist AKV if needed and if it opens up have BLT automatically cancelled and AKV booked?

Our use year is February so the reservation would be in the last 4 months of our year which, I imagine, would mean that we would lose whatever extra points we would have needed to use to book BLT if we manage to switch. Is that correct?

That is generally how it works. If you have to waitlist at 7 months, it will automatically be filled if it comes through, changing your points from your BLT reservation to the AKV reservation. Any leftover points would be returned to your account, from the use year they came from. But if you are past your banking window for the year, you will have to use them before the end of the year or lose them.

The 7 month window for a late September/early October stay is end of February though - so you would be using current year points that wouldn't have to be banked until the end of September anyway. So if your waitlist didn't come through, you would be able to get your points back and still bank them into the next year.

Provided I understood all your dates & things right.

PS - I would be very surprised if you couldn't get AKV at exactly 7 months - unless you were trying for club level or a grand villa. I bet waitlisting won't even be necessary.

Thanks for all the info! We are relatively new to DVC and I just wanted to make sure I was understanding all the policies!

Also if the wait list uses less points then only stay on it till 31 days not the 7 days. If you let it go to the 7 day period and extra points returned would go into holding and not be able to be banked.
