Booking split stays

I've been reading through threads trying to answer this for myself. My goal is a split stay, but I know I want a ten night vacation.

So at 11 months I book nights 1-10 at my home resort, on the morning of 7 months out can I shorten my stay to 5 nights and get a 5 night elsewhere? (Assuming available) Or do I need to book it as two consecutive 5 night stays to be able to cancel one?

Anyone? Can a stay be shortened? Is this a change I can make or do I have to call?
I know the whole thing gets complicated with availability, so pretending that isn't a factor, do I need 2 shorter reservations or can I modify my reservation while making one elsewhere?
I see all the posts about how to cancel one to make another. I'm figuring we might end up with only 3 or 4 nights elsewhere because of availability, so I want to know if I can modify.

The only post that showed up when I searched directly addressing this is 7 years old and people are contradicting each other.

You can knock 5 days off the original. ( I've done it 3 times on this reservation alone)

Yes, to modify you have to call, so a slight disadvantage since you have to wait until 9:00.

Another option is if you know you want 3 days elsewhere then you book your home resort as two reservations 7+3 days.

The lead guest has to be different maybe use your own on one and your wife on the other.

Then at the 7 months window you use the browser trick and secure your 3 days elsewhere.

Regards

As PP mentioned, you can do exactly what you stated online, and don't need to call MS, by making 2 5-night reservations from the start, but make sure they do not use the exact same names - otherwise, they might get merged into 1 booking.
