Booking seats on Virgin Atlantic

Was able to book seats last time we flew with virgin and i have also looked previously for our flight in October but couldn't decide which seat so left it...having a look today i have just read

"As soon as you have your Virgin Atlantic tickets or e-tickets you can update the following:

Seat selection
Meal selection
Frequent flyer details
This service is only available up to 24 hours before your flight is due to depart

."

Am i on the wrong page or has it been changed

You should be able to book your seats online. You can't do it once it is 24 hours or less before you fly as then the seating control transfers to the airport staff.

I was able to book seats and change meal preferences for our flight in Feb 2007, all very easy, do give it another go!

Ah I see what you mean as the wording is not very good, basically it is trying to say that those options can be used anytime up until 24 hours prior to departure after this time the system changes to only allow online checkin.

Yes you can do it online at that site from about 335 ? days to 24 hours.

Also you can now put in advanced passenger info required by USA to save time where you are going etc.

I entered our API onto the VA website a few months back for our June trip and it all worked fine never even thought about it til we were on holiday!!!

It isn't as obvious as you might expect. Log into your flight and then click on the 'Edit' button. You'll then be taken to the screen which has a link to the Seat Map.

Hold on, it's not that easy ! I've just booked our trip and am now thinking of choosing our seats but for the last trip with BA we used a site called seatguru.com. It's really great because it tells you all about the seating and entertainment options but you need to know what kind of plane you are flying on. I've checked the Virgin site and I can't find that information . Seatguru has quite a few different options for Virgin so I wonder if anyone can clue me in?

747-400 ver 1 is the LHR planes. 747-400 ver 2 and 3 look identical and are the LGW planes.

If flying from Gatwick or Manchester you are on the version with all PE in the bubble and if flying from Heathrow it is half PE and half UC in the bubble. Unless of course there are technical problems and then it may be vice versa but this is very rare.

Yes there is PE on both config's downstairs just thought it was easier to explain which aircraft was which by referring solely to the bubble as an identifier.

The idea eventually is that all the 747's will be converted to LGW/MAN configuration and will operate from those two airports whilst LHR gets all Airbusses

as we much prefer the 747 and being able to still choose a 747 flight from LHR is why we like VA so much.

anyone else had problems selecting seats- i have been in numerous time and selected seats to be told they have been taken. However, everytime i go in the same seats are availble?
can i ring them to select seats.......
any help would be great

I often see people complaining at the airport, they sellect seats in advance and take this as guaranteed and Virgin often move people around, I think this is due to no shows, overbooking, rules on bulkhead sitting, ie fit, people voung kids and last min upgrades.

I find the site does seem to block certain seats out I think they only allow a certain percentage in advance to be booked online ot allow flexibility.

Last time I had ot go directly to the airport, i had PE so I was ok, but people booking in on Economy had their seats taken as people had booked in at downtown disney and the attendants just took them.

Just realised LHR is London Heathrow and LGW is Gatwick (takes a while but I usually get there in the end!) doesn't help much we are flying from MAN!!!!!!! However, not sure its worth the hassle of trying to book specific seats, just want to be sitting together. Couldn't possibly be parted from my men it not just the boys I don't want on their own I need a hand or two to hold on to.
