hi all,

I'm about to book a Makahiki dinner reservation for our Aulani trip in August, and it looks at though it might possibly be on the same night as the StarLit Hui.

If the starlit hui is at 7.30pm, how long before do people claim their viewing spots? We are a family of four, so not a large party, so don't think the dinner Buffet will take us hours and hours, but equally we don't want to be rushed

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

A line forms around 30-45 minutes before. They didn't allow you to select seating until about 15 minutes before and they handed out mats based on your family size. CM's did check KTTW cards to confirm you were staying at the resort for each of us in our party. Families with children had their children's KTTW checked too. They would not accept the arm band from the pool as many families tried to do that. They were seating folks for 20 - 30 minutes. There were demonstrations of Hawaii crafts and even hula going on that a few members at a time could check out while you saved your mat.

Makahiki is an expensive meal and I not sure I would want to rush through that meal just to see the Starlit Hui. It was fun but your view is often blocked by parents going up front to get photos of their kids that were called up to hula.

That's really helpful Denise, thank you ever so much for replying x

Just wondering, if they give you a mat based on family size, would we all need to queue up, or could I queue to get the mat and then the other three join me just before the show (the show is more for me, so not sure the boys will want to queue for 45 mins to see it, but I would like them to watch it with me if possible)

We were just there at the end of February. The pool wrist bands were fine for entry into Starlight Hui. I would have been upset if I had to go back to look for the kids' KTTW cards!

I asked for a mat for 6 even though only 4 of us were in line, had no problems.

Starlit Hui pre-show begins at 7:30PM and the actual shows starts at 8PM. We got there at 7:30PM and had no issues getting decent seats :)

Our dinner at the buffet took us about just over 90 minutes. We ate at a leisurely pace. I also had to wait about 10 min. at the beginning for the chef to give me a tour of the buffet because of food allergies.

We also got to the Starlight Hui at about 7:10 (for 7:30 pre-show and 8:00 show) and got into the line (by Aunty's Beach House) before they let you in. Just before 7:30 they started to let the line in. They were really orderly - very Disney-like. We showed our KTTW cards and followed the line to get our mat, they ask how many in your party and give you the number of mats you will need. Then another cast member takes your mat and puts it in a specified spot (think like a tetris game where they fit all the mats into a single giant mass). We were on the far right about within the first 1/4 of the rows. We didn't have any issue with seeing as the image above shows with all the parents clogging the main aisle, probably because we were off to the side.

The show was wonderful. Short, but wonderfully done. You will have a great time.

Does anyone know if you can get a chair to sit in for the show?? My husband would not be able to get up from the ground medical reasons.

Thanks!!

They have folding wooden chairs (they look quite uncomfortable) set up off on the far right or left of seating area for guests that need them. There are probably about 10 in a row and their are probably 10-15 rows of them. The front row of the chairs would be a good view, but I'm not sure how great of a view if you are not in the first row. They looked quite tightly packed together.

Am I right is thinking the Starlit Hui is on Mondays and Thursday nights?

I don't think it's such a set schedule. When we were there in late February it was Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. Then the week after someone posted that it was Monday, Thursday. I've also seen a post for Sunday, Thursday. So this is my conclusion:
Thursday: most likely
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: possible
Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: not likely (never?)

We were there last August when the resort was 100% full and we were able to get a reservation for 1 night at Makahiki on the same afternoon that we decided we wanted to try it. I just walked by on my way back up to the room when I was leaving the pool and asked if we could get a time. I am not sure I would worry about pre-booking it and might just play it by ear once I got there. (Although you might have to be flexible on what TIME you went and if you can't do that and have to always eat at the same time every day of your life then of course book it now.)
