Has anyone ever done this?

Are there any (financial) consequences?

Reason for asking-as it seems crazy, but could work out cheaper to book a hire car separately.:confused3

Yes, we have done it.

No, there are no financial consequences as long as you don't tell them beforehand as they could charge you an 'unpackaging fee'.

And, yes, I'm not surprised it works out cheaper - that's why we normally do it.

We have also done this - once with Direct Holidays and once with VH. As noted above, just don't take out the additional insurance options when you book and don't declare your intentions beforehand!!

How would it work though,if say we booked with vh,but then booked our own car hire through Alamo, when vh use Alamo also?:confused3

We have done it and booked through Dollar when VH were using Dollar. You just show them the paperwork from your individual booking, they have no way of knowing you are the same person as Mrs A. N. Other who has booked a flydrive through VH.

Exactly - they see a list of surnames and reservation numbers - there's every chance on their screen there's 20 Jones, Smiths, etc, all they're interested in is making sure they pull up the one that matches your booking details

:goodvibes

sorry pardon me for seeming to be thick but I don't understand how this would save money :confused3:confused3 If you've booked a package that is flights + a car how does then hiring another car save money :confused3:confused3

If you book a flydrive with, for example, Virgin Holidays, they only include the free car for a week and the price doesn't include insurance. So you effectively have to pay extra for the second week and the insurance. It is more often than not cheaper to hire a car elsewhere than to pay the over-inflated prices that VH (or other TA) charge.

Ohhhh .... thank you :goodvibes

Did it a couple of times a few years back, never see flydrives cheaper anymore for our dates.
As above, don't tell them they will charge an unpackaging fee, just don't collect the car and arrange your own.:thumbsup2
