booking excursions through disney vs. directly with company

It seems from reading this board that booking excursions directly with the company is preferred. What are the pros and cons? I want to get to the excursion of choice, but have a great fear of not sticking with Disney and getting left behind somewhere. Also a little concerned about doing it alone. There is safety in numbers.

I would think it depends on the excursion you are considering. In three DCL trips we have never booked and excursion through DCL or otherwise. We have found with a bit of research we save more money and time just going our own way. If there were something that was a "must see" for you then I would book through DCL, it seems their prices aren't bad for a prepaid trip and at least you know what you're getting into. Be sure to remeber if you are traveling during hurricane season there is also the possibility of a "mystery cruise". Hope this helps...
