::MickeyMo Can you put a cash deposit down on a future cruise ( Thanksgiving 2005 ) then use points for the balance ? I don't want this cruise to sell out but I know I can't book it until 11 mos out.::MinnieMo

Nope. But you can deposit for a cash cruise then reserve on points at 11 months out and cancel the cash cruise with a refund as long as you're at least 61 days before sailing. The only difference is you will get a new cabin which may not be the one you want. The other problem with this scenario is that points usually come out the preceeding year in March. And while you can reserve 11 months out even if the points schedule is not available, in the past they've held members to the trade even if the points went up a lot AND you had to pay the higher points. Actually this is a good way to do it anyway. That way you can see what's best (cash vs points) and go the way that's best for you're family.

We did something similar to Dean's suggestion. While we were on the crusie this past February, we made reservations for cash for next year (really good cash discount while on the cruise to re-book). When the point schedule came out, we compared the cost in points vs. the cash cost. Needless to say,we didn't change the reservation to points because of how many it would have cost. Doing it this way at least gave us the option.

Pay with cash and rent points to cover some or all of the cost. Cash will be cheaper.
