Booking airfare for August?

Now that we finally decided on dates and booked our vacation all we lack in airfare. I have been watching the rates. I am from Dallas so looking at flying out of either airport. I have only flown a handful of times my entire life and always had a travel agent that booked it for us so this is a new experience. I have a couple of questions
1. I have been looking at rates for both Southwest and Spirit. I know Spirit gets horrible reviews. After adding in baggage/carryon fees that Spirit charges, they are still $150 cheaper. Would you pay the extra 150 to fly Southwest for better peace of mind? I keep hearing about Spirit constantly delaying/cancelling flights. I am not sure if these reports are from DFW though.
2. Should I wait closer to August to book? Or do you think I should book now if I find a reasonable rate? Do you think the rates could get cheaper closer to my trip or do they usually increase since it is summer? I signed up for all these newsletters and email updates through both Spirit and Southwest but all of the coupons and codes are never for my dates or exclude to/from Dallas.
Thanks in advance for all of your help/advice...

If we had a crystal ball we could answer your #2 question without a doubt  I think it depends on your comfort level - if you want to take a gamble to hold out to see if fares drop between now & August, it's always possible. On the other hand, it's possible they'll go up. What are your personal feelings on the price of jet fuel and what could happen this summer?

There's always going to be some deals if you're in the right place at the right time. Then again, if you wait too long those could be gobbled up :confused3

If you have in mind what you feel is a fair amount to pay for the flight & you find a flight that meets that requirement, would the peace of mind of knowing you have that part of your trip finalized be enough to convense you to book?

Consider all taxes, extra baggage fees &/or any other fees in comparing one airline to another. Good luck with your decision :goodvibes
