It all depends on the time of year you are going. If it is very popular, then yes, you will have to do how you describe. Book each flight seperately 331 days out. But you also can take the chance and wait till 331 days out of your return flight and get the round trip. If the price will be the same as booking it individually, I vote to book two seperate flights to get the best price. I have done this and it worked out great. It really just depends on how much you want to take the risk of losing that best price from the first flight.
Long story short, if getting the very best low price is really important, book the two flights seperately. I don't think its worth the risk of waiting to book the roundtrip.
I need to add one more thing here and it is a big HOWEVER. If you have any doubts on going on this trip and book the two flights seperately and want to change the dates for some reason, the change fees can really add up with two seperate flights. I just went through this, as my DH had not found a job by the time our vacation arrived. I needed to completely change our dates. But luckily it was around the war last Spring and they allowed changing flights for free. It is typically 50.00 a person to change. They will charge this for both flights, so double that cost. Now that I probably have really made the decision difficult...I still say book seperately, it is worth it to get the cheapest fares. Good luck.
