You don't have to buy the insurance thru DCL. You can do a search & get alot of info for companies who you can go thru for ALOT cheaper rates. We used AccessAmerica's AAA family plan where kids are free for the same coverage offered thru DCL. AA is the company that DCL uses BTW. You don't have to be a member of AAA either.
Regarding changing your dates, it was very easy for me to do this. I just called & gave them the new dates. Painless.
As far as WHEN to buy it, you'll need to get it before that magical date when the trip is no longer refundable (is it 60 or 90 days before you leave?). Up until then you can get your money back anyway.
I would have to agree with poster, lbgraves, with the AAA. I priced insurance on insuremytrip.com and it was very high compared to AAA, Access America Family Plan. Shop around and I would not purchase from Disney because they only have THEIR best interests in mind. Good luck.
