Book Fair!!!

There was a thread recently on the Budget Board about book fairs, but it went the direction of complaining about the costs, etc. Could we share some book fair thoughts without making it a budget issue??

I LOVE the Book Fair!!! We shopped last night and DD12 came home with a stack of great new books. I'll have to revise her Christmas list, as I had planned to get some of her choices for her as gifts, but I'd rather the school get the money.

A little funny - I've been cleaning out DD's bedroom closet this week, and I found 2 or 3 old posters from the Book Fair. They were all of the kitten/puppy/fluffy cloud variety. I said, "Honey, do you think we can skip the kitten poster this year?" and she looked at me and said, "Mom, I don't want a kitten poster this year, but can I get the one of Johnny Depp instead?"


Looks like we've really moved into the teen years!!!!

I really miss dd having book fairs. I've always thought the cost was pretty reasonable--better than the book store, anyway. Which is where we have to buy her books now that she's 16.

We always had a blast picking out books for dd and we also bought a couple on the wish list for her classroom each year.

I think anything that can get kids excited about reading is pretty terrific!

I love the Book Fair, this year my DS (6) came home with a bunch of great books. And I didn't think the price was bad either.

I would rather do Book Fairs instead of the other Fund Raisers - like candy & wrapping paper.

I love the book fair! DD has her's today. We get to go Friday evening. Can't wait!

It's hard to believe how much anger the Book Fair generates.

We had our book fair last week. I also like them and think the prices are very reasonable. The part I don't like is all the other little trinkets they sell, that appeal to the kids more than the books themselves do.

I like the book fair too. We all love books in our family and the Scholastic Books have such great pictures!

The two things I dislike about the book fair are (1) the trinkets and (2) how making the list of books makes some of the kids think they are getting everything on their list. However, I dealt with this BEFORE the book fair by having a discussion with DS5. I explained that he would not be getting any toys at the book fair, he could look, but he wasn't going to get any. Also, I explained that I would only buy DS one book, and if his list of wants was too long, I might not be able to figure out which book was his favorite, so maybe he should just put three books on his list.

As it turned out, I was volunteering at the book fair when DS5 class went to look at the books. When he had his three books on his list, I was able to steer him towards the baskets of books requested by the teachers for the classrooms and had him pick his favorite book from there.

I thought it all worked out well, DS got one book, DD2.5 got one book, and we bought a book for the classroom. Our PTO raised $2000 in Scholastic vouchers for new books and media for the school.
