Sometimes, the points are part of a special incentive, like the add-on offer for existing owners I spoke of above.
Currently, for new buyers, I believe
DVC offers
either an $8 per point credit off the $98 price,
or 100 points for a minimum purchase of 150 points. (I'm not sure about that, but that's the way it was before the price increase.) If you're just buying 150 points, it's a wash, but if you're buying more, the $8 credit is more advantageous.
Another important thing to check is whether you can get
2004 points
that you can bank. Usually, those cost you $3 per point (so you pay $93, instead of $90), and you may have to pay maintenance, but if they're
fully bankable, they are golden. Although you can only bank a particular allocation of points once, they effectively carry over from year to year because you use banked points first, and you can bank the most recent year's points.
