Can I get Bonine over the counter, or is that a prescription drug? Is there a children's dosage? I still need to ask the kids' pediatrician at their next appt. We don't cruise until Nov, so I guess I still have time. Thanks.

I have the box right in front of me...it says not for children under 12 and it is an over the counter medication.

it is over the counter (I ordered mine from drugstore.com because the pharmacy near me didn't have it). My ped. said half a pill once a day was fine for my kids (9 and 7), they had no side effects at all from half a pill. Just make sure you clear it with the doctor. :)

You can also buy Meclizine (which is what Bonine is) from the pharmacist for a much cheaper price. I just bought some last week and 100 pills were around $6.

Be sure that you try it at home before your cruise. For some reason, I had a bad reaction to Bonine when I took it on a whale watching trip. Even though it is supposed to be non-drowsy, it made me very drowsy and it gave me one of the worst headaches I have ever had. Better to give it a try at home than possibly having it ruin one day of your cruise. I have heard that some people find either sea bands or ginger capsules (or ginger snaps) work well for them.

Good luck and have a wonderful trip!

My youngest son IS 12 1/2 but small for his age. I asked the pediatrician recently about the dosage and she said to give him 12.5 mg which comes to half of a bonine. Even if they're 12, you should ask if they are on the small side since medication is really based on weight and not necessarily age. My son meets the age requirement but only weighs about 70 lbs

Walmart - 8 tablets $2.98. Adults once a day according to the box. Right next to the No DoZ with the tylenol and motrin aisle.

As Mickey&Minnie said, you can get Meclizine Hydrochloride (which is the same medicine in Bonine) at most pharmacies in a bottle of 100 for under $10.

If you can't find it locally, they have 100 ct. bottles at Drugstore.com at $7.19 for 12.5 mg tabs and $9.49 for 25 mg tabs. You really don't need to pay extra for the Bonine name. I've taken quite a bit of both and never noticed any difference between Bonine and the generic Meclizine tablet. Do check with your doctor for dosing with the kids though.
