Bon Voyage Breakfast - Overrated?

Just a little bit of background, the Bon Voyage breakfast at Trattoria Al Forno has been my top favorite meal at WDW. When I first heard about it, I was ecstatic. I mean, Rapunzel is my favorite character on screen and to meet in the parks and when I heard she was getting her own character meal alongside with Flynn Rider as well as Ariel and Eric, I had to find a reservation right away. At first it was pretty much impossible to get a reservation, and all the rave reviews I heard from it made me more desperate to want to go. With a bit of persistence, I was able to book a reservation at a reasonable time, and when the day of the reservation came, my experience exceeded expectations.

First of all, the character interactions are awesome. This is one of the only character dining experiences with princesses that's not within a park and if you are a big Rapunzel fan like I am and/or a fan of any of the other three, this is the perfect experience because it's the one place you can meet them without having a park ticket. Second, the service was amazing - I had one of the best servers out of all my dining experiences at WDW here. The food was also really good, and that should be the most important thing. You start out with refillable pastries, a fruit bowl, and any of the items on the menu. For annual passholders, the price is $36 for everything, which is really cheap for a character meal let alone one with princesses. I've tried everything on the menu and I have to say my favorite item is the Tangled Eggs but I also like the Tower pancakes. At this point, I've visited I think about 15 times now and the manager and chef even came out to greet me on one of my visits, officially dubbing me as a regular.

So why am I suggesting it is overrated? Well, the last few visits have been subpar. Granted, lately I've gotten later reservations including the reservations they now do after 11 AM so maybe getting something after 10 AM might have something to do with it, but that should be no excuse. First of all, the pastries they give you now are cold and stale and I wouldn't be surprised if they were made like three days before. One visit I went the pan was already on the table before I got there. They don't ask you if you want a refill on pastries either so if you want more (keyword: IF) you gotta ask your server up front, which leads to the second and probably the biggest problem: servers that go missing in action yet try to rush you out the door at the same time, if that makes any sense. Basically the servers will use an assembly line approach much like that used at restaurants like BOG to get you in and out, yet most of the time your server is no where to be found. I think this is more of a management issue than anything where they will only have three servers in the entire restaurant serving 20 or more tables. The fruit bowl they serve seems a lot smaller than what they had originally when they gave you a choice of that or yogurt but I'm not sure. The main dishes are still pretty good but I feel like the quality even there is starting to drop. Character interactions are still fun, but now it's like they get the same four people to play the characters instead of rotating them out based on the last few visits, and if you're an avid character person you know this can make things stale.

Overall, I really think Bon Voyage is resting on its laurels, but the problem is they can't afford to. This isn't Cinderella's Royal Table, Be Our Guest, or Chef Mickey's which stand out to people who pass by; this is at a restaurant that people would easily overlook and not know about simply by walking past it. I really want to enjoy this place, but it's really hard to considering the last 4-5 visits have been subpar. Will I go again? I don't know. If I do go, it will certainly not be for a reservation after 10 AM.

It sounds like you are ready for a break. I hope it's fresh again when you go back. We will enjoy it for the first time in June. Can't wait!

We are going to try it for the first time in October. I hope it’s good!

I agree with @mom2rtk. Sounds like you need a break.

Last September, one of my nephews went with his little family, and they were not pleased with the experience. They liked the pastries, but their entrees were not well prepared. Ariel had a bad attitude and was flat-out not nice or friendly.

A few days later, my other nephew’s family went, and they loved it. The food was good, and they even got a calzone to go. Their little girls participated in some kind of parade through the restaurant.

So I’m thinking the place isn’t very consistent.

It was good when we went last July. Great character interactions and good service.

One plate of pastries was enough for us.

I booked my first visit to this restaurant for my October trip. I hope we have a good experience!

We've never done this character experience before so I have been looking into it. Thanks for the detailed review!

We went this past week. The characters were good. Flynn and Prince Eric were particular good. I did however feel that the characters were a bit rushed, but felt that way at many, if not most, of the character meals. The service was just so so. Our waitress seemed a little curt. She was working hard, but not very attentive. Maybe she had too many tables. The food was better quality than most character breakfasts. I personally didn’t like mine. I got the calzone. I’m not a fan of marinara sauce in the morning or with eggs. My DH got the same and really liked it. My daughter got the pancakes and gave them a big thumbs up.

Trying this in June. Sadly it was my 17 year old who told me to book the place. I had forgotten Rapunzel is her favorite Disney movie.

We have a reservation in May for 1030 hope it's ok, never been before.

I agree with pp.. i think you need a break! We are planning to go in November and I am excited for it.

I would like to eat here as it is close to the beach club. However, I'm not crazy about the menu offerings. I would love some regular scrambled eggs with the pancakes, or an eggs benedict.

I think Pete, Charles, Steve, Ryno and whoever else should do a Disney Dining Show review here. Ask for Jess to be your server because she is AMAZING

I ate there last October. I wasn't impressed but I think I just made a poor choice. I don't like smoked salmon so I have no idea WHY I picked that option and with egg whites. Not my cup of tea at all. But everyone else in my group enjoyed their meals. The characters were ok but Arial was a no-show which was disappointing to my great-niece.

Like others have said, I think 15 times in a year or so is too much for any place. We went last November and it was(arguably) our favorite character meal. Flynn Rider was AWESOME! Rapunzel was good, Eric was ok and Ariel wasn't great but I think that's part of her character. She's not Snow White, she's supposed to have a little bit of an attitude. We're going back in November and it's on our list. Not sure if it'll make the final cut or not but we'll see.

Technically, Ariel isn't supposed to talk when she's on land. Unless of course this is Ariel from the god-awful sequel, which she also has a bad attitude in as well. I guess she's really popular though - so much so that having her at CRT and Akershus wasn't enough. IMO I don't get the crossover, like how this idea was even conceived. A Disney Princess character meal makes sense, but this is like they want to have Tangled Meets Little Mermaid. I would think if they were to do a crossover it should be Tangled Meets Snow White since they're technically both from Germany. In reality, they should focus on only one IP, preferably Tangled. I mean, wouldn't it be awesome to have a Mother Gothel character meet?

I'm pretty sure they would have trouble selling overpriced eggs to meet a character who doesn't talk.

Personally I have never had issue with Ariel meeting at CRT or Akershus.

And technically, does she even wear a green dress in the movie?

She was great at crt! She kept obsessing over my pin lanyard.

She wears a green dress as a doll. I think it would have made more sense for her to wear the blue and black dress that she wears throughout most of the movie, but I guess they wanted her to be more "princess" like.
