BOG lunch, newbie question

We are heading to WDW for our first time in June.

Can someone explain/clarify the dining plan?

We have lunch at BOG, the menu shows soup, entree, dessert, and drinks. Do we get one of every category? Also, DS is super picky and may only eat fries there, will they count it as his meal, or am I better just to pay for a side of fries?

My question is specific to BOG, but any input is appreciated as to how it works! Thanks!!

You would get an entree, dessert and drink for a meal - if you want soup, you would have to use a snack credit. I don't know if you can buy just fries there (there's no indication that they're sold separately on the menu at allears.net), but if you can, and you think that that's all your DS would eat (one of the children's meal options is grilled cheese - won't he eat that?), then you would definitely be better off paying OOP (out of pocket) for that.

The side of fries is $2.09 so that would make sense to pay out of pocket. Unless you are allowed to eat his kids meal?

I am getting my 5 year old the fries because she won't eat anything else there. The 2 year old will eat my entree with me.

You can also substitute soup for your dessert. It is an option when you are making your dessert selection.

With the recent changes to the DDP, you may now substitute any dessert or non-alcoholic beverage for a Disney Dining Plan snack credit (as long as it is done in the same transaction). A perfect example of this is at BOG , we were able to substitute onion soup for a desert at BOG during our last trip. At other CS locations we sometimes substitute a bottle of water for a desert.

I may decide to get an alcoholic beverage with my BOG lunch, so can I sub soup for the non alcoholic beverage, then? I was thinking I could do this but wanted to verify. Can I do this if we pre-order, or no?

There are no alcoholic beverages served at lunch. You may only get that at dinner time (beer and wine).

Good to know. I think there are speciality non-alcoholic beverages? I think that was what I was thinking of getting there, anyway. Got confused. So if I did that, could I sub out the beverage included in dining plan for the soup? The French-onion (I believe I'm remembering correctly) sounded good.

On the DP you can sub either the the drink (non alcoholic) or the dessert or both. So in theory you could take one entree and two drinks or one entree and two desserts. Or in BOG specifically, you can take one entree and two soups :)
Or any combination of those, of course.
So yes, sure, you can take an entree, a soup and a dessert. That's what I did just a few short weeks ago. And check out the link in my signature- just updated BOG in my dining report. Pictures and stuff! :D

I see everyone has pretty much answered your questions, but just BTW, there are a few entrees on the lunch menu that come with a side of fries.
You can always let your son have the fries if you don't want to buy a side of them separately. :)

The way I read it, you can sub the items noted for an item designated as a snack. Since I have gotten French Onion soup several times with a snack credit I assume yes.

Thank you!!

Oh...one more question (sorry to hijack, OP)...if I substitute, can I pre-order?
