The new Boeing 737 jets are getting bigger and better since the first of the Next Generation 737's came out a few years ago. The first was the 737-600 with a longer wingspan and new quieter engines, Than the 737-700 with more powerful engines, Next the bigger 737-800 at 128 feet long, and with a passenger capacity of 140-160 people, and the longer 737-900 at 138 feet long and a capacity of 150-180 people. Many airlines like Delta, Continettal, Southwest, and American Airlines have the Next Generation jets in service, replacing older 727's and DC-9's.:D

Very cool info! While I am sad to know that the 727 & DC9 will be replaced (flew in this often as a kid) it's nice to know that the 737 is still going strong :)

Welcome to the DIS! That's very interesting, thank you.

I loved the 727! It is such a beautiful plane...I miss flying in them

They used to call the 727 the 'three holer'.. It was never determined if that had to do with the 3 engines or the 3 lavatories... :) ;) I agree, a very nice plane and it is sad to see them go just as it is sad to see the L-1011 and DC-10 disappearing as well. Time marches on..

Hey, do we have an aviation forum? ;)

Ron, do you work for Boeing?

My brother does, but not in the "aircraft line."

My airline flies 737-800 series aircraft and we have them configured to 175, and the cabin is really very spacious. We offer a greater pitch (distance between seats) than most other airlines do, along with full leather seating with fully articulate headrests, state-of-the-art digital entertainment systems, 2 huge galleys which offer hot meals, and lavatories with baby changing tables.

Our cockpits are also very advanced, with full automation of flight controls and flight management from take-off to wheels-down. Along with heads-up displays and cockpit security, we have what many other carriers only dream of. Can't be beat, believe me!!

We retired our fleet of 727s almost a year ago. DC-9s are still flying (AirTran, the former ValuJet flies them exclusively - they are almost 33 years old!).

L-1011s were a favorite ship of mine. Very smooth and quiet in the cabin, but high service demands and limited parts availability caused the retiring of most of these aircraft worldwide.

The next to go are the 747-200 series. Some companies still fly them, but alas, they are getting old and uneconomical. The Boeing 777s and 767s are replacing the 747s on long-haul routes internationally.

Airbus, of course, has its own market segment with considerable success, but the cockpit is designed with a different purpose. It isn't "pilot centered" as the Boeings are.

Nice thread!! I always enjoy talking about my first love, FLYING!!

Actually, AirTran has been retiring their DC-9s as well.. They have a large fleet of Boeing 717s now and were the launch customer.

Yes it is sad to see them go.. A wonderful aircraft, but old by today's standard. Even as technologically advanced as the 777 is, it still doesn't have the allure of the L1011 to me anyway.

I agree!

Hey SgtDisney!!

Just read your thread - haven't been around much to get on the 'net. Thanks for your reply AND thanks for flying OUR airline!! Yes, Midway it is, and I am glad you fly us to FL!! Our 737-800s are very nice (thanks for the complement!).

Hope to drive you around in the sky sometime! If you fly to Aruba, Cancun, Jamaica, or Los Angeles I'll be up front!!

Cheers!!

Good thread,

I heard Northwest recently purchased some new planes, tho I have yet to see them in service.

Just flew NW from MSP to MCO on 757 and it was very cramped in coach.

Herc.

Captain Bramm, I will look for you if I ever take those routes. I wish I could.. Maybe LA in a year or so. I know I will be at Disneyland for the 50th anniversary!!!

hercamore, I think I heard NW was to be taking deliveries of A-330s very soon replacing the DC10s with them in selected routes. Those are widebodies with 2-4-2 seating. Should be interesting.
