Bob Hope vs Danny Kaye

I always thought that Danny Kaye was much funnier than Bob Hope. I just never "got him". I suppose that is almost "unAmerican".

That would be the same Bob Hope who was born in Eltham, England then?? :)

I know what you mean though....he seemed more American than a lot of Americans!

Of the two I'd say Danny Kaye was much the cleverer....he was naturally funny and very clever, Bob Hope was a great deliverer of lines, but not a "natural".

There again, both men are to be admired, Hope for his tireless entertaining of the troops overseas and Kaye for his work with UNICEF.

Two truly great entertainers and two truly great men.....

One of my favorites...

Someone mentioned Rosemary Clooney, so I'm not going too far off topic, but I think SHE was just beautiful in that movie - not to mention far more realistic in size and body type than Vera Ellen. I loved Rosemary Clooney. Even read her autobiography "Girl Singer" - which is VERY interesting.

the "road" pictures were made the the 1940's, before "White Christmas".

the Hope Crosby chemistry would have been all wrong for this movie.

my younger sisters (identical twins) do a nightclub act -- and they include "Sisters" in their act, which they do with huge fans, just like in the movie.

Your'e not alone. I never 'got' the appeal of Bob Hope either, and I have to confess, I don't get what it is about David Letterman that most people find funny.

I think because Danny Kaye was more of a dancer than Bob Hope...Bob Hope could dance, he'd been brought up in Vaudeville, but I think when they were looking for a partner for Vera Ellen they wanted more of a dancer than comedian type. Speaking of this movie...am I the only one who has noticed that Vera Ellen's costumes cover the neck 100% of the time ? Did she have a tracheotomy scar, saggy neck ? I love this movie, always makes me cry.

Never thought of that. I did notice her waist is the size of my pinky, though. Tiny tiny tiny!

I was trying to figure out a way to say this exact thing!!

But Hope instead of Kaye in White Christmas?? BLASPHEMY!! :teeth:

Here's a pin up photo of Vera Ellen in a swim suit. It may have been re-touched, but her legs are not overly thin for her body. Women had much smaller waists as the norm in those days.

Hmmm. I don't think her legs were that thin at all. Not in the movie, and not in pictures you can find on the internet of her in the movie.

I think she looks a lot healthier here than in White Christmas. We watch the movie every holiday, and it always comes up that Vera Allen looks creepy thin. Her legs have no curves in them in that movie....her legs are just sticks.

I love that movie and have always loved Danny Kaye, even though he was old enough to be my grandfather.
